Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

We traded a d-man that the coach did not like or trust for a d-man that the coach might like and trust.  Salaries are a wash so I don't really see any harm.  No other team wanted Liles or he would have been long gone.  It's under-performer for under-performer but each might fit new team better.

I think that's what most who are wary of the trade fear.

Neither team, TOR or CAR, is taking back any salary in this trade. Full value of contracts move with both Gleason and Liles.

I wasn't expecting it, but too bad.

Might not be a great trade. I'd bet Liles outperforms Gleason the next two seasons.

Doesn't matter if Carlyle wasn't going to play Liles.

One other issue with this trade - Liles could potentially be the piece that helps propel the Canes into the playoffs ahead of the Leafs.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Trade call between CAR and TOR could not be completed before CAR GM Jim Rutherford's flight departed for WSH. Will happen after he lands.

Have you watched Liles the last few years?

Is Gleason taking minutes away from Ranger a terrible thing?

Yeah I think this is a good deal. No room for Liles with Gardiner and Rielly playing similar styles and this prevents Ranger or Fraser from playing regularly. I'll take Gleason over those 2.

Leafs consistently get scored on from in close with not much punishment being handed out.  Gleason should help in that dept.  Not to mention with our young D another veteran won't hurt.

He was a lot better than Fraser. He could move the puck a lot better than more than 1 Leaf D

There seem to be a few guys playing elsewhere, out performing guys playing here, but who'd never be played here.

Yes. He still moves the puck well, and that's what the Canes need the most on the backend. He could be help boost the level of the Canes offence enough to help them make up the small margin between them and the Leafs.

And he's got some pretty significant holes in his game that consigned him to the AHL this year and rendered him essentially untradeable. Him being the difference seems about as likely as Gleason being the difference the other way.

I don't know much about Gleason, but I like that Nonis finally addressed the defensive situation, and with a veteran to boot. Hopefully he adjusts and fits in well with the Leafs. They've been in need for a strong, stay-at-home D man all season. Hopefully Gleason fits the mold.

Buy-out information from LeafsNation:

                        Liles Buyout Gleason Buyout
2014-2015       $916,666.67 $833,333.33
2015-2016       $2,416,666.67 $1,833,333.33
2016-2017       $1,291,666.67 $1,333,333.33
2017-2018       $1,291,666.67 $1,333,333.33

I don't mind this deal. More stay at home guy, certainly bigger and injuries only appear to be an issue this season, so I'll give him a chance. Change of scenery could pep him up a bit also.

I think his NTC changes after this season a bit, more options. He may also fit into the team, we can't know until we get him, either way, I don't think it's a bad trade. Gives JM Liles chance to get his career back on track also.
