Gleason traded to Toronto for Liles

Carolina has a spot for Komisarek but not Gleason. Something tells me we aren't going to be happy with this trade.

You understand that's not really how trades work, right?

We should have traded Clarkson before Liles then.....

A change of scenery can help certain players. Hopefully is does with Gleason.

I'm surprised that most people dislike this trade...  We move a guy Carlyle obviously doesn't want and won't use for someone who could potentially be an upgrade over one of Ranger or Fraser.

Worst case, he's just a bit of extra salary ($125k) who also sits in the press box or minors.  Seems worth a shot, given the teams performance.

Completely agree, worst case scenario is what you said.  So much promise though for this to be a steal of a deal and if is doesn't so what.

In what world is an about-thirty-year-old, stay at home defenseman who received some early honors but hasn't been effective since suffering a series of injuries, being paid for $4m/year, called "a steal"? I thought that was called "Mike Komisarek."

It's a pretty meh trade, I think. Just shuffling the deck of borderline NHLers with bad contracts. Leafs are paying a bit more in cap space and assets, while getting the marginally worse player, not addressing the needs of getting better or freeing cap or roster space. It shouldn't cost $4m to do a bit better than Mark Fraser.

If we can just trade anyone we want and get back whatever we want I trade the Leafs for the Blackhawks.  I think the other team might get a say though???  For the record I think you could trade Clarkson, not everyone thinks this contract is absolutely terrible.

If only the Leafs played at the grotto in Lourdes.

Yeah, that's also not how trades work.

Gleason is a borderline NHL player? His play must have dropped off pretty badly since he was selected to the US Olympic team in 2010.

It has. Carolina wouldn't be trading him for Liles if he hadn't.

Just looking for a puck moving dman that can help a horrible PP and a stagnant offence.  Fit is good for both clubs but Gleason is still a better player than Liles, no risk here, Liles was untradeable and sitting in the AHL for most of the season, I make this deal 100 times over, live with it.  Do we need more help, yes, does this trade make sense, yes.

It's just weird.  I believe we gave up the best player in the deal (Liles) but we had to take on more cap hit and throw in a prospect to boot to get it done.  In the long run it won't matter but it feels like we got hosed???

Komisarek is not Gleason, don't even go there, Gleason is a pretty mobile defensive minded dman who plays with an edge.  A declining Gleason is still way better than what Komi could muster in today's NHL.

Yes, because having a bunch of offensively minded, soft, puck moving dman is clearly working for the Leafs this season.  Gleason is a mobile, aggressive, defensive dman who has played on the international stage and has been a leader, nope we don't need a player like that.

We're not getting Gleason in his prime unfortunately, as it's already been said. But he could still be a useful addition to the team.

I wonder how Kulemin feels about playing with him.

Are you his agent?

It's hard to be mobile, and aggressive from the rehab ward.  He has missed a significant amount of injury time on 3 separate occasions this season.  Maybe he bounces back.  I thought we could get more cap flexibility for Liles.

I don't know. Their seasons look pretty similar to me. And I haven't heard anything good about him in the last few years.

I think it's pretty safe to say that if we could have, we would have.
So why then do we have to give them a prospect as well.  The leafs are taking all the risk.

Dude the Canes are taking the same risk.  They wouldn't take Liles for nothing when he was sent to the minors.  And neither would any other NHL team.
