Goaltending conundrum

So not only are they very well prepared for the 2013 free agent class (much like the Leafs), but it also suprises me that they can't spend money for the likes of Brodeur and Parise, especially since they're going to have to spend to reach the floor anyways.

What money?

The league's money?

Touch?, nonetheless...  :P

Part of me would love to see Brodeur here for 1-year but I'm not sure I want to see his potentially last year in the NHL tainted by having him exposed in his 40s coming out from the Devils defensively responsible system to the mess that Toronto puts out every night.

He's made $73 mil during his career - in salary alone. Surely, he's not going to bicker over money at this juncture.

He also went through a very publicly ugly divorce. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he wanted/needed to max out what is likely to be his last contract.

Well, I just meant that they have no sense of their budget. They may have to be a floor team and, if so, signing Brodeur/Parise would be impossible while icing a full roster.

"he will be testing free agency if a deal is not in place by Sunday."

So, posturing for more money from NJ most likely.  Still...one can dream...

McKenzie said he hasn't used an agent in a long time.

The contract would have to be quite a bit bigger to pay the agent and still have more money for himself than going without an agent.

I think this means there's a real chance he leaves NJ.

I do not think that is accurate.  I heard that Crosbie's agent will make a bit over $3 million for his contract extension, which is a lot of money, but only about 3% of the total contract value.  Thus, Brodeur does not need much of a bump to more than recover the cost of the agent.

so...what would it take to pry him out of NJ
1 year 8mil?
2 years 12-14mil?
too much...too little?

Seems like way too much to me. But I usually end up saying that in most cases, so who knows.

I'd like to see it happen as a big "FU" to Gillis.  "Hey Gillis, who's taking Luongo now??  Keep asking for the moon sucker"

How much cap space do we have? Yeah, give him that.

Seriously?

I mean, I get that he would be better than anyone we have, even playing at the diminished level he's been at these past few years.  And would be a great mentor.

But it's not like he's the piece that will get us a Cup in the next year or two before he retires.  If he were, say, 35 or 36 and you could get him for 4 years, then maybe.  But otherwise, Luongo, for all the downsides, makes much more sense for this team at this point in time.

Exit the line for Luongo and get in queue for Broduer....

If Brodeur leaves NJD, the goalie market opens. If he lands in Fla..Theodore springs free, or Garon in TB...plus, price may drop for Luongo. - Dreger

What motivation does Brodeur have to go to the Sunshine State? Starting his retirement early??
