Goaltending conundrum

DarrenDreger: Martin Brodeur very likely to test free agent market. Brodeur has hired Pat Brisson (CAA) to represent him. Bidders get ready!

Wow.  No way.  I figured it was NJ or retirement for him!

The answer! (maybe)

While I know the odds of it happening are ridiculously slim, a year of Brodeur on the squad working with the young goalies could be the best thing to happen to this team in a long time - even if he and Allaire have very different philosophies towards how to play the position.

Yup, yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup!

And then fire Allaire and have Marty stay on as goalie guru.

"he will be testing free agency if a deal is not in place by Sunday."

- Pat Brisson

I don't know what his criteria for choosing a team would be, but I'd make every effort to get this guy signed if he hits free agency.

Short term commitment, still has it, 0 asset cost.

Everything we'd be looking for, but I'd guess he'd want to join another contender, not the leafs.

So, posturing for more money from NJ most likely.  Still...one can dream...

McKenzie said he hasn't used an agent in a long time.

The contract would have to be quite a bit bigger to pay the agent and still have more money for himself than going without an agent.

I think this means there's a real chance he leaves NJ.

Figure this has something to do with NJ's money problem? Otherwise it seems insane.

I imagine so, otherwise Brodeur would have likely been signed within hours of him deciding to play another season.

He's made $73 mil during his career - in salary alone. Surely, he's not going to bicker over money at this juncture. I'll be a little shocked if he doesn't finish his career as a Devil.

Somehow, this might be good for the Leafs because it could cause a little domino effect through NHL starting goalies. Unlikely but a long shot maybe. It could also hurt the prospects of moving Luongo or devalue his talent cost further (unless Lou goes for him so he and Kovalchuk can grow old together :) ).

All we need now is for Tim Thomas to change his mind and a desperate situation might get interesting.

I just looked at the Devils capgeek page...they only have one...ONE...forward signed beyond this next season (and I think we know who that is).

So not only are they very well prepared for the 2013 free agent class (much like the Leafs), but it also suprises me that they can't spend money for the likes of Brodeur and Parise, especially since they're going to have to spend to reach the floor anyways.
