Goaltending Options

So talking a bit in the other thread about the team's goaltending got me thinking about what next year's tandem will be. Bernier's a given, I think, and then there's the question of his back-up/1B. Sparks, I think, is a long shot at this point so an external option seems like a fair bet.

Here's a list of available UFA goalies:

Any options people like? If the aim is Lilegard....another bottom five finish, should we roll with Sparks? Or scrape the bottom of the barrel for what's left at the end of July?

Liljegren.

Just at first blush, I think you don't plan around one particular draft choice, however, if the goal is a bottom 5 finish and getting a top pick ( and maybe lucking out again with the lottery ) yeah you probably could just roll with Bernier and whatever backup, Sparks at the worst. The potential for picking up a goalie due to expansion is a consideration, though not known yet, as well as whatever Leafs management has up their sleeve. Not a lot on the ufa market, some back ups, Carlton had a few listed in another thread.

The joke there being that I gave it an attempt and then decided to abandon it.

Edit to satisfy my point and click grey cells...

I have a passing interest in Zatkoff.

And the bit would have been continued had you tried again.

Possibility perhaps of taking a big salary underperformer as a backup with an asset or two in return?

ie -Mike Smith/Howard/Lehtonen?

It's certainly possible. My thoughts there are:

1. I tend to think the assets involved in deals like that are going to be less than we think.

2. I'm not inclined to help Detroit out like that unless they pay an unreasonably high price.

3. Smith's actually been fairly decent the last few years. He was awful in 14-15 but roughly league average or better besides then.

4. Lehtonen is interesting.

What if Bernier comes into his own next year?  I dunno why, maybe resonating magically with Zaitsev ....

Anyway, if I'm wrong and we don't sign Stamkos I'd just go with Bibeau/Sparks and hope for a bottom 5.

If Bernier gets off to a great start next year, even if he has a really good full season, how comfortable would you be giving him a big money extension on the back of one really good season in his walk year?

They make a pill for that.

Wait, isn't Zatkoff the pill? I'm so confused.

I should probably see a doctor.

I picked him largely because LA drafted him, and they keep drafting Stanley Cup finalist goalies, and the Penguins picked him up after, and they tend to know what they're doing with goalies.

I'm not sure what's on the y-axis, but I assume it's some measure of player goodness.

Well, that's the crux of my question ... I wouldn't.  I don't know what I would take to make my want to sign him long-term.  I guess only if they went deep in the playoffs on his back.
