Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

Comparing Bernier's angles/rebound control with Reimer's is night and day.  Reimer is sometimes able to bail himself out, Hasek-style, when he gets into trouble, but he's prone to bad games when his scrambly play doesn't work. He also seems to really lose his confidence after a bad goal - it comes through in his body language, even if he says the right things to the media after.

Bernier seems to me to be more quiet and positionally sound, which should lead to greater consistency.

I wonder if as a "blocking goalie" rather than a more nimble one Reimer is at a bigger disadvantage with the equipment shrink this year.  Bernier seems quicker, equipment changes could be a factor if he runs away with the starting job.

The last two pages of this thread are ridiculous. Nuts I tell ya.

1 bad game and everyone is questioning Reimer. Man if Bernier has a bad game tomorrow should I just blow up my tv and call it quits?

If you go through the post history of those of us who have been somewhat critical of Reimer, I think you'll find that we have longstanding concerns about certain aspects of his game.

That's actually a good point.

"For me it's not a huge change, I only lost an inch," Bernier said. "I think the way I play, my butterfly's not very wide, but I guess we'll see if I start getting scored on [through] the five hole. For some guys it's a really big change, some guys lost 2 1/2 inches, so that's 5 inches total when you go down in a butterfly. It's huge."

I'll take your word on that.

Seriously. How does Reimer top this kind of goaltending???

At some point, Bernier is going to have a bad game.  I'm just.. not really sure when or how that's going to happen.

EDIT: I'm basing this on the assumption that he's only human. But if it turns out that he's Kryptonian or something, does he still qualify for Man of the Match votes, or do we need to start a whole "Kryptonian of the Match" category?

It's a small sample but his numbers are incredible. He just looks so technically sound with his angles, rebound and puck control.. We are not used to this. As great as Reimer was last year. Every shot seemed like an adventure. Some nights he was lights out but even then his style never made me feel this confident. Just for today Bernier like it or not is the #1..We need every point we can get so I see no need to not just ride this wave

Using Bernier's small sample size as an indicator, Reimer really can't.

However, this is a great situation for the Leafs as Reimer isn't your typical backup.  When he goes in, you just as much expect him to get a win, something not said for many backups around the league.  If, knock on wood, Bernier goes down to injury, we know Reimer can handle the reins.  The same is true if Bernier starts to tire out or goes through a rough stretch.  And I don't think Reimer is rolling over in this battle -- once he gets his chances, he'll be making the most of them.

As long as Reimer doesn't pout about this (and his personality suggests he certainly won't), and instead uses this as motivation, and forges a good relationship with Bernier (sounds like they already have), this has the makings of one of the best Leaf goalie tandems that I can recall.

I am a huge Reimer fan, and want him to remain number one, but so far this year I am more comfortable with Bernier in net, I hope he can keep up this play, reminds me of when we had a top notch goalie in net, such as Cujo or Eddie. Bernier playing like this in the playoffs could mean a really deep playoff run, if we could only solidify our D, I am not so much worried about our Forwards as our D.

I don't know how he can keep up this level of play for very long, but if he does theres little doubt he'll be on team Canada in Sochi.

We're 5 games into the season. I'm sure Reimer is capable of having an equally impressive stretch of games. In fact, I know he is because he has before.

Reimer's first month with the team was very impressive.

That was likely his best stretch statistically, I wonder if Bernier will be around that mark after a month.

Has he actually?

Yes. I mean, we're looking at 3 and a half games from Bernier. From March 15th to March 22 in his first season, Reimer had a 3 start stretch where he when 3-0, with a GAA of 1.00 and a Sv% of .971 and had 1 shutout. To start February 2012, Reimer went 3-0, with a GAA of 1.00, a Sv% of .971 and back to back shutouts.

I'd say both those stretches of similar length are similarly impressive.

I suspected he might have, assumed you had the research, and you delivered.  A+.
