herman said:I'm pretty surprised by this. I didn't think he'd be a lock, but I also didn't think they'd go Leivo over Holland so early.
Do we have a glut of bottom 6 centres with the ability to move up into a top 6 wing role for brief stretches?
Nik the Trik said:I guess it'll depend on if he clears. If he does, you can make the Schroeder argument and, if he doesn't, you figure the Leafs were more or less done with him and decided to chance it.

CarltonTheBear said:I don't think whether or not he clears now would really mean much. I'd imagine his pending arbitration case might scare teams off a little since they'd be forced to go into it with basically no preparation done.
Nik the Trik said:I guess? But it would at least mean that no team out there wants Holland for free at whatever it would take to get him signed and avoid the process altogether. I don't know what that number is but it can't be a lot.
CarltonTheBear said:His case is scheduled for Monday, and the team claiming him won't know if they were successful until noon. Come to think of it, I wonder what time his hearing is scheduled for. A lot of players have theirs in the morning.
bustaheims said:Well, they'll know by noon tomorrow, so, any team thinking of claiming him will have ~3 days to put together a case. That may not seem like much, but how much time do you really need to pull up the most recent comparable players to justify the contract you intend on offering? They won't have an incredibly detailed case, but they should be able to put together enough of one.

CarltonTheBear said:We saw teams not give their own RFAs qualifying offers a lot this summer so that they would avoid arbitration, and in some cases (like Colborne/Caglary) it cost the team that player. I think the threat of arbitration is very real for some teams.
