Hurricanes @ Maple Leafs - Feb. 22nd, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

For someone who has only put one puck past a goalie with his stick this season, I’m giving my MotM to Pontus.

I'm happy for Steeves. He's leading the AHL in goals handily with 29 and ppg for players with 27 or more games played. He's set Marlies scoring records. He's done everything he could do to earn a shot. He should be able to help with bottom six scoring if he can handle the defensive side of the game. I hope he gets a stretch of games beyond the 4th line to try to prove himself and a few shifts on the 2nd PP.

I think Nick Robertson is trying but 4 pts in the last 22 games -10

As I recall, Jarnkrok is about 50% on NHL faceoffs. He's decent defensively.
Maybe a 3rd line of Steeves-Jarnkrok-Domi might be a higher scoring interim measure.
The bigger question will probably be will they get scored on more than they score.

Yeah, two of Carolina's three were bouncey-bounces.
The Leafs have given up a lot of those goals this year. I don't know if it's just a byproduct of the Leafs not giving up a lot of truly bad goals that it just seems high but we don't seem to have these games where the puck bounces off four things to go right into the crease with the net empty as often.

Great for Steeves to score. One goal doesn't establish and NHL career but he's done everything necessary to get an NHL opportunity and effort aside, Robertson clearly isn't working out as a reliable/trusted player for Bérubé. I like him. I think he could have a good career but I just can't see it in Toronto at this point. I'd like to see Steeves get a run with someone marginally better than Kampf at some point to see if there is something there. If he can translate his 40+ goal pace in the AHL to respectable NHL production that would be a huge relief on deadline acquisition but again, one two point game doesn't establish anything

In Domi's and Robertson's last 25 games, Domi has 12pts, Robertson has 10pts. 89 sits 5th in G/60 mins, 8th in Pts/60 during that span. Domi is 10th in G/60, producing at 1/3 the rate of 89 and 9th in Pts/60.. I agree the Leafs need an upgrade in the B6 but Domi is not the answer. Too weak defensively and not enough offence. Would like to see Steeves get a legit shot in the top 6/9 in place of Holmberg or at minimum on L3 if McMann gets moved in the top 6. In a perfect world I'd like Jarnkrok on the 4th line. He doesn't bring enough offence to be top 9. It's going to be interesting to see what Tre does moving forward. The B6 continues to be an issue. Now is it a matter of getting a legit 3C to have a solid L3?

I've been a Domi advocate till now. It was hard watching him suck so bad last night after watching 4 Nations quality.

Honestly, at this point, both of them can go. I don’t have faith in either of them contributing enough to be worth having in the lineup.

Yeah. The crappiness kind of creeps up on you over time. Then, suddenly your realize why his career has been like a deck of cards getting shuffled over and over again.

Whatever makes the Leafs better is all that matters. Would be great if they all could succeed but that's not happening. Team first.

He has .43 ppg for his NHL career. That is between top 6 to top 7 for scoring among forwards (20 or more GP) in today's NHL
He scored 20 goals for the Leafs in 2023 (top 4 level goal scoring). He's top 5-6 in goal scoring and points among forwards since coming into the league. +70 is 40th among forwards. Those are among the best numbers in the Leafs bottom 6. Pacioretty and Domi have better career numbers but neither is delivering those this season. I do not think he's the ideal solution as his playoff numbers dive but the others who have failed to deliver should step aside while he gets a shot as an interim measure.

Don't care abut reg season. His playoff numbers are bad. 3pts in 18 playoff games for the Leafs. Not good enough.

I already expressed concern with his playoffs and have before.
But as of right now, with the bodies they've got and a bunch of regular season games to play, he could help 3rd line scoring, the PK and he's decent defensively. Which is more than we can say for Robertson, Holmberg or Domi, etc this season. He's done a better job filling in on the top 6 than Holmberg, etc.
