Is Nonis good enough?

Who are we counting as the Leafs excess? Just Liles and Connolly?

I'd say Liles, Connolly, MacArthur and Komisarek.

I doubt Komisarek is movable without retaining salary, but the other 3 could get us something.

I'd rather just use a compliance buy out on Komisarek than carry any cap hit for him next year.

I think Komi still has value to the right team. as the Leafs improve our excess players gain value, even him.

Obviously I can't say for sure or anything but with the cap coming down I think it's going to be fairly difficult to move anyone like Liles or Mac who are under-performing and have some significant cap hits for next year.

MacArthur is a UFA.

This will be just the thing to put Nonis to the test.

Komi  will get us a return as well.

No, he won't. That contract of his negates whatever marginal on-ice value he provides. Nobody wants a $4.5M bottom pairing defenceman.

I have to agree with the notion that the only way you get something in return for Komisarek is if you eat part of his cap hit - and considering he still has another year on his contract, that means his money is still on the cap next year - i.e: when the cap is supposed to come down.

So, I'm with Deebo - unless I'm getting a 1st or 2nd for Komisarek (which isn't happening), I'd rather simply keep him as the #7/8 and buy him out in the summer so he's not on the books next year.

Is he? I thought he had another year. Ah well. Just Liles then.

This is his 3rd season with the leafs, came on a 1 year deal and signed a 2 year extension in the following off-season.

I don't know, I think there could a few teams out there interested in Liles. The Red Wings or Hurricanes perhaps.

Good question, because really, once Gardiner and Rielly (maybe Ranger) make the team (as early as next season), who else will be on the chopping block? Franson? Gunnarsson?

Huh. Time flies when you're having fun, I suppose.

There absolutely could be. I just think that as we get closer to the deadline we'll see a lot of teams looking to move salary which will give the teams willing to take it on a lot of options.

How will the defence shake out next year?

Rielly, Gardiner, Ranger, Franson, Gunnarson, Phaneuf, Fraser, Holzer, Liles, Kostka, Komisarek

That's 4 or 5 too many NHL calibre defenseman.

Can't count on Rielly being ready, Ranger who knows.

And to think, I haven't even added Percy and Finn to that list. Although I doubt either of those two will be ready for next year.

At a guess? Komisarek is bought out, Rielly doesn't make the team, Kostka is back in the AHL, Ranger...I have no idea if he's really in the conversation and then you're back to a fairly manageable number.

Outside of Liles & Connolly, I don't see any other vets moving at this point.  Leafs are in the playoffs right now and having veterans around isn't a bad thing.

I think if they can free themselves of Liles, they will go for it.  Other than that, not seeing the fire sale happening.

i'd hope they deal MacArthur if they don't have an intention of re-signing him, regardless of where we are in the standings this year. Especially if they have a strong offer on the table.

I really don't see Kostka being sent back down, unless his play starts to drastically diminish. He appears to be one of Carlyle's favorites.

I think Gunnarsson is our best trade option.  They survived and played well without him in the lineup and he should be valuable enough to net a decent return.

If Liles were to be traded it would either be for a later round pick and/or mid-range prospects.  His age, cap hit and spot currently in the press box are not helping his trade value.
