It is in the NHL's best interest to have the Leafs win the draft lottery.

i'm not saying that there was conspiracy in place to have crosby go to pittsburgh ...but i don't quite get this logic that there was no advantage to it happening ..so you're telling me the nhl had little to no interest in keeping a franchise like the pens alive?  this isn't a team that came in in the 90's and was now having trouble...it's pretty well established..i would tend to think that had they moved that would have at least have seen seen as somewhat of a black eye for the nhl.... that even after decades of existence ..and some success...that the product still wasn't selling south of the border.

I am going to go out on a limb and say the Leafs will draft first overall.  We will win the draft lottery tonight.  Book it.

I see. Like Messier, you will guarantee a win.  Awesome. I'm glad you are on my team!

Is there a draft for lottery position today?  Or when is that happening?

The lottery is tonight. TSN has coverage at 8pm.

Anyone carrying it live online?

TSN would be the only one streaming it officially, and it doesn't look like they are. I'll keep an eye out for an unofficial stream once it starts. The show is at 8 but the drawing probably won't happen until 8:20ish I would imagine.

i figure the habs will win it..just more salt in the wound

Or a team just behind them so the Leafs drop to 6th overall?

i'm not sure that would bug me as much ...the difference between picking 5 and 6 shouldn't be earth-shattering ..but the thought of the habs taking that first overall ..especially with them being in our division ...just awful ...i'm sure they feel the same

Nobody said that. What I said is that if the league was going to engineer where Crosby landed then Pittsburgh isn't the place that would yield the most benefit to the league. Crosby landing in Pittsburgh helped the Penguins but Crosby landing anywhere would have helped the team he played for. He might have saved Atlanta, he might have sold out Nashville's arena every night.

To believe that the league engineered the draft so Crosby became a Penguin basically meant that the league risked fundamentally violating the public's faith in the sport and risking serious and significant lawsuits from teams that didn't win the lottery in order to put Crosby in a place that didn't help the league much more than putting him anywhere else.

i guess it's the anywhere else I don't agree with ..again...unlike nashville ...or atlanta ..this is a city that has had hockey ..since what...the second expansion?  atlanta has had two teams of course..but unable to keep either ...

this is a team with a history...one where one of the game's best players played..brought the cup ...and then went on to return to "save" the team financially.

in theory having any team have to move would seem bad...but equally?  i guess i tend to feel that the penguins are a flagship team ..not on the level of the original six teams ..but still the brand recognition is there ..they're well established ... i think them folding despite 66 heroic return would have been more of a black eye than other possibilities ...

but you're right ...they probably didn't fix the results ..

what really sticks with me ..is that before the draw it seemed like the penguins could really use it..perhaps even more so because of all the press at that point talking about their possible move to hamilton it did seem like fantastic timing more so than a lot of the other teams ...with the exception of maybe...buffalo?

Dear Gary Bettman,
If Toronto wins the lottery, I promise never to mention Kerry Fraser again for the rest of my life. I swear!
Sincerely,
Your loyal crustacean

I know it's fashionable to call into question the draft lottery ever since the Penguins, a dying franchise desperately in need of a new arena, were able to 'randomly select' possibly the game's greatest superstar since Gretzky.

But that's just...well...

Dumb. The word you're looking for is dumb. If the NHL rigged the Crosby draft he'd have been a Ranger. The NHL didn't rig the draft to save the 23rd biggest media market in the US.

That was a joke, by the way.

I don't see what that has to do with the central question of the league's interests. The League desperately wanted to grow and gain a foothold in the south.

well that's where we disagree ...not as to if that was a goal of the NHL ..obviously southern expansion was ..just that you think it was more important than losing the penguins

I think your POV, however, depends on the NHL putting your shaky definition of a "black eye" over money. Keeping the Penguins/losing the Penguins(and it's not like the Penguins moving is a certainty without Crosby) would not have meant as much to the league financially as opposed to a big spike in popularity in the south.

but i balance that against the fact that had crosby gone somewhere like nashville that he might not have mattered as much ... does nash matter as much in columbus as much as he might in detroit?...  maybe crosby is bigger than that ..but i'm not sure his impact is the same no matter where he goes..though i guess the nhl would be hoping against hope that it would be.
