James van Riemsdyk

Out for the balance of this game with a lower body injury. I'd really like to know if this is serious or something shorter term.

Wrong James.

Now you're confusing me.  Aren't we talking about the same guy Bob Cole was praising Sat nite, none other than Jim van Reimersdyk?

I cant stop making the comparison to Dave Andreychuk. JVRs got roughly the same size and skillset, and has been scoring the same types of goals.

If JVR is our 1993 version of Andreychuk, then Reimer is the '93 Potvin. Frattin bears a slight on-ice resemblance to Wendel (without the bite). Grabovski could be Borschevsky, and Kessel, Gartner. We still need our '13 version of Gilmour. ;D

EDIT: I'd like to audition Ryan O'Reilly for that role.

COmpletely different player.  I loved Andreychuk but JVR's skill set is way broader.  Not sure if Andreychuk would have the career he had now with new rules limiting hooking, cluthching, grabbing, etc.; his skating was mediocre at best.  JVR, on the other hand, can fly.

I've said it one before, but while we're giddy with modest early-season succes and making outlandishly optimistic comparisons, I'd like to throw in that I see a bit of young Sundin in JVR.

You're doing a big disservice to Andreychuk with these comments. He may have been a bit slower, but he's also one of the highest scoring left wingers in NHL history, and is the league's all-time leader in power-play goals with 274. The clutching and grabbing you speak of was usually carried out by the opposing teams defense upon him to try and remove him from the front of their net.

Since I'm in the mood to flog a dead horse today, I just wanted to illustrate my point by bringing up JVR's goal last night.  God love him, but going wide and blowing past a defender with pace was never in Andreychuk's toolbox.

Different game though.  When Andreychuk played a defender like Schenn could have wrapped his arms around him and dragged him down on that play.  You can't do that anymore.

Regardless, some of the things that JVR is pretty good at, things like standing in front of the net and having the hands to convert chances on, Andreychuk was among the best of all time at. JVR's got a step on him but let's cool our heads a bit.

Fair enough. I never said they were identical players, but most of the goals JVR has been scoring this year do look eerily similar to the ones Andreychuk would score. That was the point I was making.

Can we bury the dead horse now? ;)

When JVR starts scoring 40+ goals a year and finishes with over 600 career goals I'll be happy (provided it's in a Leafs uniform)  ;)

Yes, of course. :D
