Jets @ Leafs - Apr. 5th, 7:00pm - CBC, SN 590

In the aftermath of yet another sad defeat, it seems that the major problem is the defensive zone coverage (which of course also involves the forwards leaving the zone too early and not covering the points very effectively).

Carlyle (and his assistants)  certainly deserve blame for their system or lack thereof.

But, talent-wise, the Leafs defence are just not fast enough to be competitve, with the exception of Gardiner and Reilly.  Ferraro remarked about that when he was doing the game this past week.  And very few commentators are really focusing on the lack of mobility and skating that the 4 or 5 veteran defencemen have exhibited.

Dion is not a bona fide #1 defenceman, and should not be given the ice time accordingly.  He may even be behind Gardiner and Reilly in terms of offensive ability right now (let alone 6 or 7 years from now  -  shudder).  Yet Carlyle has played him time and time again, even though he has made mistakes so often.

The accountability of the veteran defencemen when they make mistakes was lacking, and the Leafs will never truly contend unless they get a few more viable options over the summer on defence.

(And trade Phaneuf  and Clarkson if there are any stupid GM's out there who want to inherit any ridiculous 7 year contracts!!!!)

This team has no ability to cycle the puck. It's downright comical. I've never seen a leafs team like this that are unable to create any sustainable offensive pressure.

Leafs were outshot 39-15 at even strength tonight. Possession rating was 28%. Against a bottom 10 team in a must-win game.

Guys I hope to never see again in a Leafs home uni:

1.  Phaneuf
2.  Clarkson
3.  Franson
4.  Orr

Guys I expect never to see again in a Leafs home uni:
1.  Bolland
2.  Reimer
3.  Raymond
4.  Lupul

Lupes was one of my fav players. Sadly...he only showed up for a handful of games this season.

Even his fans have to admit he is injury prone.

What is the context for this?

Phil Kessel was one of six Leafs skaters on the ice when Saturday?s game ended and saw a couple of the beers come crashing near his skates. The star winger..glared into the stands and appeared to utter a few words. Asked later if he understood the frustration of fans, he replied: ?You know what, I don?t want to comment on that right now.?

?We?ve all been fans before,? said Reimer. ?You know you
expect so much from your team and you want to win so badly that when things don?t go your way and maybe if you feel
that they didn?t give it their all, which wasn?t the case here, we
did we just didn?t have enough.

?They?re the ones paying the tickets; they have the right to do whatever they want.?

That's the best Kessel can come up with? They played a terrible, low-effort game in a must-win situation on the heels of an epic losing streak. I'd say now would be a good time to say that they've blown it, it's embarrassing, and that they needed to play much better at both ends of the ice. Instead we get Kessel reacting angrily to fans venting their frustration and saying nothing else.

I don't love Reimer's response either. The Leafs have to stop shrugging their shoulders after playing like garbage and start acting like it pisses them off. Because it should.

This whole team are either arrogant jerks or have their heads so far up their collective rear ends that they have absolutely no idea how bad they are.  Maybe the fans are sick and god damn tired of forking over $100 for crappy seats to watch a team no-show night after night.

And honestly, if the "best" you can give if getting dominated by an also-ran team in essentially the equivalent of a Game 7 of the playoffs, well, that doesn't say very much about your best.

The list of players who should be gone from the team next year should be very, very short.

The fans have every right to pissed off at us.. boos us etc.. They pay huge money on merchandise and tickets to support us and we consistently let them down. We flat out sucked again... That is something that I'd like to hear from one of the players at least. get mad... Not well we weren't good enough tonight.. no comment..I don't understand them booing at the end of the first period

Losing is obviously pissing them off. I'm sure they're not apathetic towards it no matter what face they show us after the game. But honestly... you think that Kessel's reaction wasn't appropriate? I'd say it was the most controlled thing I've seen anyone do in sports.

If I'm working for my customer and do a decent job (score a goal in Kessel's case) but then my co-workers weren't their best and that customer throws a beer at me. I'd probably have that customer banned from my business.

Just because the leafs are playing like shit doesn't mean we can attempt to assault them or harass them in public for instance.

Boo them at the game... you paid for the right to do that. But the second you start showing what kind of pathetic low life you are by throwing your drinks or food or whatever at the people that are trying to represent you (no matter how poorly they're doing it) you're now the one who needs to look at yourself and seriously contemplate what went wrong in your life to make you such a self centered jackass.

People keep talking about the whole paying good money and stuff like that to justify this. Well yeah, we do pay more than almost every NHL team fan base I believe. But if you follow this line of thinking its ludicrous.

I paid $400 so I can throw a beer.
I paid $1000 so I guess I can start throwing eggs.
I paid $10000 so I guess I can start punching them in the face as they walk back to the locker room.
This other guy paid $100000 so I guess he can just kill the players he doesn't like.

I realize I took that list to the extreme but there isn't an appropriate plot line for money spent --> abuse allowed to be given.

I feel more ashamed of those few "fans" reactions than I feel being a public leaf fan right now. I said it already... but it was pathetic. Really pathetic.

Just because the leafs are playing like shit doesn't mean we can attempt to assault them or harass them in public for instance.

Throwing beers on ice isn't assault. Booing isn't assault or harassment. When one doesn't get what they paid for, they voice their dissatisfaction. When I buy a product and it doesn't live up to my expectations I return it or get it exchanged.

Don't know why you are so adamant fans don't show their displeasure. Don't you understand our frustrations? 10 years and one playoff appearance (that too in a shortened season). Think about that. This in a city that is the centre of the hockey world.

???

Kessel, JVR, Kadri, Gardiner, Reilly, Bernier (even then we still don't even know what we have in the postseason).  Outside of those 6 there isn't another guy on this roster who MUST be brought back.  Kulemin is a guy I really like too but he doesn't make or break a roster.

Ultimately this team quits far too often.  They take entire periods off.  They can't hold a lead to save their life.  A lot of their problems arguably may be fixable with a better system in place but you can't fix laziness.  For all the talk of the "Muskoka 5", this team is a million times more frustrating for not battling hard in games.
