TSNBobMcKenzie: Nazem Kadri's new two-year deal with TOR has an AAV of $2.9M.

Nice deal for the Leafs.

Good deal but it doesn't leave much for Franson, and possibly Raymond, does it?

If they demote Holzer and Smith/Bodie/whoever is in line to be the 13th forward right now, they have $3.333M available in cap space when the season starts.

DarrenDreger: $2.9 x 2 years for Kadri. $25,000 more per year than the Leafs offered 1 month ago.

DarrenDreger: Kadri's willingness to sign and agree to bridge contract was presented to the Leafs this afternoon.

Looks like he was just waiting until the eve of camp to see if the Leafs would fold. They didn't.

It's obviously a good number for the Leafs but I still think the Leafs will regret it a few years from now that they weren't able/unwilling to give a longer deal. Of course, that hinges on Kadri continuing to light it up so there are worse problems to have.

Mirtle sums it up well:

One of the main concerns for the Leafs in negotiations was that Kadri?s sample size is incredibly small, as he has played just 99 regular season games in the NHL and averaged only 15.5 minutes ice time a game in that span.

Leafs coach Randy Carlyle also used Kadri in a fairly sheltered role in his first full season with the team, playing him primarily against third and fourth lines.

Another issue with Kadri?s production is that it was, in part, driven by being on the ice when the Leafs had an exceptionally high shooting percentage, something that has proven to be difficult to repeat from season to season.

That said, Kadri?s cap hit is reasonable given he?ll fill the second line centre slot, likely between Joffrey Lupul and newcomer David Clarkson, and be at least a 50-point producer.

I'm looking forward to watching Nazem light it up over the next couple of years.  Definitely a very exciting player.

I agree with Nik here.  I was on Nazem's side hoping they agreed to a JVR type of contract. It might have looked good in a few years if he keeps up his Top 20ish in scoring pace.

Good deal for both sides. Now for the Leafs sake let's hope Kadri can prove he's actually a $6M/year player and we have him for nice and cheap the next two seasons. :)

Excellent.  It's going to be an interesting two seasons.  Lower price than I was expecting, I'm sure promises were made.

Really hope they can get Franson, now.  I can't say enough good things about that guy.

Think it's the perfect deal.  If Kadri becomes a big success after two seasons, he deserves the raise he'll get.  Take a long-term risk to hopefully rip him off later just isn't worth it.

Hate to harp on this but why o why did they give Fraser, Fransons cash..first bonehead move by Nonis

You're suggesting Franson was going to sign for $1.3M?  Or that the $400k 'overpayment' to Fraser is impacting Franson's negotiations.  Or that the Leafs should have let a perfectly good 6'th defenseman, who literally fell into their lap, walk?

Because, he probably would have received as much, if not more, in arbitration. They probably shouldn't have given him a QO, but, really, the amount he's being overpaid doesn't have much impact on the overall cap picture.

While I do like Fraser,  I'm pretty sure the part in bold is exactly what's happening.  My guess is the Leafs are trying to get him for $2.0, and Franson is probably asking for $2.5 (if not more).  So that 400K could probably the difference between them.

If Franson's only asking for $2.5M, that's something that the Leafs can make work very easily. If they were to run a 21 man roster with Franson at that number, going with 12 forwards and 7 defencemen, they'd have $833K in cap available (or more, if they send down Orr or McLaren instead of Smith/Bodie) - more than enough to bring someone up in case of injury - and they'd be able to bank some the unused space to give themselves a little more wiggle room down the road. The issue with Franson, from what I can tell from the various reports, is that they're nowhere near being only $500K or so apart.
