Keith Yandle signs with the Florida Panthers

Keith Yandle has agreed to terms with the Florida Panthers: seven years and $6.35 million average per season

The Rangers traded his rights there a few days ago. Brian Campbell's replacement.

A big money deal, but he was arguably the best defenceman on the market. Now the top-two guys are both gone (him and Goligoski).

He'll be 30 when the season starts, so, this practically locks him up for the rest of his career - or, at least, the rest of the time he's likely to come close to being worth this kind of money.

So regret kicks in about 2019?

I'll be generous and say 2021.

I watched Yandle for a few years in AZ and I really don't get the hype??  He's a lot more Mike Green than he is Drew Doughty and I don't see him leading a winning charge.  And for that money I expect a guy who can lift the team to higher places. I like the AZ signing of Goligoski much better.

Yeah I think they can get a solid 5 years out of this deal at least. Yandle's an ironman. He hasn't missed a game in 8 straight seasons, and actually played 84 games in 14/15 because of a trade.

He's a solid 2/3, but, yeah, he's not a guy you want as your #1. Thankfully for Florida, he won't be.

Well his cap hit is in line with a UFA Mike Green so that does make sense. A UFA Drew Doughty gets $9mil+ easy.

That's very generous. Still, very solid middle depth dude for a team on the cusp.
Here's to hoping we can snap up a nice RFA option from them when they hit their cap crunch.

Tough to really see this contract as a product of hype. Doughty's next contract will probably pay him 10+. This is 2-3 defenseman kind of money.

The reason he never gets hurt is more about the lack of physicality both ways than his toughness. He avoids the corners and is a fire sale in his own end.

Is he the Oprah of pucks?

The Doughty reference wasn't about money but play.  If you take a watered down Doughty you have a decent second pairing D man.  Yandle isn't that and as we saw last couple seasons the Rangers actually played him as little as possible 5v5 and held him for PP time.  That isn't exactly a guy you want to commit to for 7 years starting at age 30.

He was 4th among defencemen in EV ice-time with the Rangers this season, and the top-4 were all very closely grouped together.

Keith Yandle, like Gardiner, is basically the classic stats vs. eye test defenceman. He was arguably New York's 2nd best defenceman last season. And the idea that he's a mess defensively is completely overblown.

Isn't that kinda like being the tallest midget in the room though??

I can never understand these charts, but I'm assuming this is saying Gardiner is a big improvement defensively over Yandle.

I like them because I find them easier to understand than most stats things thrown out there.  But basically you want your graph to be as high as possible for each of those metrics and the creator estimates the point at which a D should be considered top 2/4/6 etc based on those metrics.  I find them very clean and easy to refer to if you quickly want to get some sense of 1 or 2 players.
