Kessel scores how many?

I think I was one of the very few on this board that thought the Leafs got a great trade for Kessel to Pittsburg. It's proving that Shanahan got the better of Rutherford.
I also stated that Kessel would eventually get bought out and I,m still sticking with that position.

We only get that first if PIT makes the playoffs. I have to admit I thought Kessel would score 40+ easily along side Crosby. Who would thought both Kessel and Crosby would be going backwards this year?

Lets hope they can make it in.The Leafs should lose to them everytime they play them.Bernier your in net every time Kessel shoots.

They get the first if Pittsburgh makes it to the playoffs either this year or next. Obviously you'd prefer the pick this year but the value of the trade is more or less the same either way.

They're too offensively skilled for it to not turn around eventually, but whether that's in time for this season who knows.

They're 3 points out with a couple games in hand. If they can turn it around soon-ish, they'll be fine.

They're only 3 points out of 8th with 2 games in hand, and they have a short run of softer opponents coming up. There's still hope.

If they miss both years it's a 2nd in 18 I think??

Yeah but with parity like 95% of the league within 3 points of first or last in the league.

That's my understanding of it. So while it might be tempting to say that if the Leafs only end up with a second out the deal the trade looks worse, if Pittsburgh really misses the playoffs in the next two years the trade will have turned out to be a complete disaster for them.

If I've told you once, I've told you a million times - never exaggerate!

I had to relook at the deal cuz I couldn't remember what the Pittsburgh 1st entailed. The more I look at that now the more I'm hating it. Only get the first if Pitts makes the playoffs. We had tp pay part of Kessel's salary plus the condition on the 1st round pick. Crap.

So you'd rather have Kessel's contract right now?

The team needed to retool. I know Kessel had to go to change the culture of this team but I said it back then hard to replace a scorer of his calibre. I don't know what's going on in Pittsburgh I thought he would light it up there. The only thing is and I've said this a hundred times on this site. The draft is a crap shoot unless your drafting in the top 5-10 you don't know what you're going to get. I know they had to get rid of him but if the Leafs were willing to pay for some of his salary then I would've had no conditions on the draft choice. Nice to have the pick but a pick somewhere between 20-30 is not as good as a lottery pick that could land you in the top 10. Plus they gave them back their 2nd rounder. They should have backed off one of the 3.

So do you think the Leafs didn't push on those matters? And that they didn't make the best deal they could with Pittsburgh? What if Pittsburgh just says no? It's not like the Leafs had teams beating down their door to trade for Kessel.

The Leafs had no leverage and, as we're seeing now, it was unlikely that would ever improve.

If they attempted to sell him off the season coming up they'd get even less for him.

Are you implying the Leafs don't understand finding a perennial 30 goal scorer is hard and that picking 1-10 is better than picking 10-20? What if noone else was offering a first? I would definitely roll the dice on a protected first round pick. The only reason you're blustering a la Burke right now is because in hindsight the Pens aren't doing so well.

It also should be kept in mind that the Leafs eating some of Kessel's salary wasn't some sort of trade chip they were "willing" to throw into the deal because they had cap room, it was a necessary element of the trade from a cap perspective. If the Leafs didn't retain salary or take back contracts, Kessel couldn't fit under the Penguins' cap.

So it didn't give them any leverage. They couldn't say "since we're eating salary, you take off the protections" when Pittsburgh could just say "if you don't eat salary, we can't make the trade".
