Hopefully this is a case where the Leafs' only being 80% stupid will save their own bacon.

Hooray for Nonis maybe not being the stupidest GM in that particular bidding war!

I'm fine with the idea that a lot of players aren't interested in coming here. The reality is that the Leafs aren't a contender and realistically nobody who is on the FA market is going to make them one. Even if the Leafs landed the best UFA's to reasonable deals they still wouldn't be legitimate contenders so wading into the folly of the first day of free agency seems pretty pointless.

If they want to push towards another playoff berth... I think they can just as easily do that sorting through the remainder bin.

This is a veritable hogshead of good sense.  We should just skip tomorrow and set our clocks ahead to July 2.  You guys can have a national holiday next year.

The UFA chase reminds of John Cleese's line when someone asked if he would remarry -- Cleese said something like he just couldn't wait to buy another house for a woman he doesn't love.

Here the question is: who do we want to pay not to play for us in two years or so?

More succinctly: what defenceman do we want to pay not to play for us in two years or so?

News1130Sports: 2 teams that have called Tanner Glass include the Maple Leafs and Rangers.

Glass is a reasonable 4th liner, I guess. He has some PK experience, so, at the very least, he'd be more useful than Orr/McLaren.

Expectations for me would be Glass on the 3rd line so that Orr/McLaren get their 4th line duty.  Ashton and D'Amigo to the minors.  Faith...it's a shakin'

As per Kypreos; Dave Bolland expected to sign 6/7 year deal with FLA
Was just on the radio in TOR. Said he expects Dave Bolland to sign a 6 or 7 year deal with the Florida Panthers, worth north of 5M a season.

Dreger reported earlier that the Leafs wouldn't go over 5 years, or 25 million

5 million are you kidding me? Not worth anywhere near that...see you have fun in Florida

I really find this hard to believe.  Why is it so hard for a GM with a young team to envision better ways to use that cap space 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 years down the road?

When compared with these kinds of contracts, Phaneuf is superb value.

I really like Glass.  I actually had him in my Cap geek lineup as the 4th line LW until I fantasized the NYI trade for Boyles rights and Matt Martin.

I agree with others, I hope Nonis is a man of his word and shakes Bolland's hand and wishes him good luck in Florida.

If that is what he wants then I 2nd that.

Who'd blame him for signing where he'll get a playoff round or two at the end of the year.

I can't wait to see what money he gets.  When you find out, keep in mind: Never had a 20 goal season; never had a 50 point season. And coming off the serious injury.

I've got my fingers crossed that they sign Moulson & D. Boyle.  I don't think they have a realistic shot at any of the bigger fish, like Stastny.

To me, Stastny makes the most sense. That or a defenseman. But there is no centre in the farm system that has a chance of becoming a no.1 center, except perhaps Kadri, but chances are slim on that happening. He can score, he's good on faceoffs, a good playmaker, and he'll cost only money.

However, I actually voted for Vanek. I think you have to at least talk to him. Our top four wingers are generally very good, but we need one more and I don't know how you can pass up the kind of talent he has.

Third choice would be Ehrhoff.

Tanner Glass had the worst impact on his team's possession last season: http://www.extraskater.com/players/dashboard?min_gp=50&dir=reverse&sort=cf_pct_rel ?

Woohoo

Really? Vanek? Wasn't he on Montreal 4th line in the playoffs? No thank you. And it's easy to pass up on him, don't inquire!

How are people thinking about Del Zotto? Not even necessarily for the Leafs but in general. He's 24 and has lots of talent. Defenders bloom a little late right? At 24 with that talent, he seems like a good risk.
