Leaf Free agent Target(s)

Who would you rather target July 1st?

A timeout wouldn't have made a difference at that point. The Leafs had already lost the game. The best time to take the timeout would have been the exact moment Carlyle told them to sit on the lead, so somebody could slap some sense into him.

All teams pretty much do that naturally when up by a few goals, it's referred to by many as 'score effects'.

I suppose that's different than sitting on the lead?

Apparently, the talks with Ryan O'Reilly aren't going too well

Yes, but that whole arbitration thing will sort all that out.

Yeah, but also, now that Stastny is gone, O'Rielly is not leaving the Av's any time soon.

Might not be as neat and tidy as other cases.

It's definitely a high quality piece.  I mean when journalists tell you that "I told the Avs they should have signed him" and "they didn't like it when I did it", it is clearly an article based on far more than just facts.  Arbitration means very little in terms of long-term deals.  They could very easily go to arbitration, have a 1-year deal and then work out a long-term contract in training camp that kicks in the following year.

O'Reilly has some pretty solid numbers, but his career high is still 64 points in 80 games.  He's very good defensively but I think it is a reasonable approach to get one more year out of him to assess whether he is legitimately a 7+ million dollar player on a long-term deal.  He's 24 with 5 seasons under his belt.  The Avs have his rights for 2 more years regardless of the outcome of the arbitration hearing.  He's not going anywhere at this point in time.

I always thought you couldn't negotiate before a certain date with a player who's signed through arbitration.

Arbitration prevents ROR from being able to sign an offer sheet, but there are absolutely no restrictions on the Avs getting him signed before arbitration or negotiating with him at any time he's under contract. The only restriction is that, on a 1 year contract, he can't officially sign anything until January.

Roger that, thanks!
