Leafs acquire Jack Campbell and Kyle Clifford from LA

Coming into this season I did like Moore, but I really was cautioning others who said he could step into more of a 3rd line role on  the team. I know he's had injury issues this season but he really has been kinda invisible so I don't view his addition in this trade to be a big loss. Potentially losing two 2nd rounders could hurt, especially since it's for a back-up goalie and a 4th liner. Obviously Dubas was kinda backed into a corner here, potentially because of his own inaction. This is a pretty tough trade to grade right now.
I'm not liking doing Moore for rental Clifford and Campbell for 2nd & 3rd. What did Can Talbot get?

He was dealt for a 2nd and a 3rd. I think Talbot, especially at the time of the trade, had more potential than Campbell though.

Time will tell as far as the price paid, but this trade does address a couple positions of need...namely a better backup goalie and some grit.

More about Kyle Clifford:

Dubas has been GM for a year and a half now and this is his trade history:

-Cleared our bad contracts from the previous regime (Martin, Zaitsev, Marleau)
-Acquired a gritty top-4 LHD defenceman (after years of not having anyone on that side who could provide grit)
-Acquired a puck-moving top-4 RHD defenceman (after years of not having anyone on that side who could break the puck out)
-Acquired a back-up goalie and a gritty 4th liner (albeit maybe a little late, hopefully not too late)

I definitely don't get people who think he isn't constantly trying to improve this team.

Campbell is a slight improvement over Hutchinson, with more minutes and higher xSV%.  Of course, we?ve yet to see what he?ll bring.

Would need to keep his AAV at or below $1mil though.

I said this about Clifford potential next contract thinking he was coming off an $800k deal. That's his cap hit for the Leafs since LA is retaining 50%. He's actually coming off a 5-year deal that had a $1.6mil AAV. So it's tough to predict what his next deal will be so I'll just wait to see how he performs for the rest of his season before trying to do that.

And he has converted a few freebies into legit NHL assets:
Moore was a dev camp invite and now he is Kyle Clifford
Justin Holl was an ECHL pick up and now he is Justin Holl, arguably the only reason our RD hasn?t imploded entirely.

What 2 2nd rounders? Only 1 can move to a second, no?

Nice, I like this. Hopefully J Campbell works out well, and finally a little toughness and some familiarity too (ex-Kings). Bye Hutchinson! 👍

Funny I started to hear Campbell's name floated around the last week or so. Hopefully he's better than Hutch-it's-in!

Campbell hasn't been that much better than Hutchinson this season, which is concerning. LA is, of course, a tire fire, so, that definitely has had an impact on him - though they still have been a dominant possession team and pretty solid defensively. They just can't put the puck in the net, and Quick has been terrible. That concerns me a little, but, something had to give.

Clifford, on the other hand, is a big upgrade on Moore.

My bad. I misread the first pick as being a guaranteed 2nd rounder for some reason. That makes me feel a little better.

He also had the 3rd best save percentage in the league last season at .928 (albeit in only 31 games). So there's something there. At least enough to take a chance on.

Yeah. There's potential there for him to be better than he has been this season. I'm just concerned about him coming from a strong defensive team to a not so strong one when he's having a down year.

The problem is this is kind of a Raycroftian move. Hoping for a goalie to get his game back is not really a winning strategy. How do we know his sample now is not more representative of his actual play? Maybe the other options out there were too expensive? I mean this isn't cheap. Freddy went for a 1st and 2nd. I'm hoping there's some rationale for this level of overpay. I didn't want to overpay for Georgiev but at least he's got a .909 playing behind a bad NYR team. There will be some irony here if this move doesn't work out as he was pretty bad on the Soo when Dubas traded for him.

Campbell could go all Hutchinson and the cost would still be a drop in the bucket.  Pretty cheap price for insurance.

Agree. Leafs didn't pay a huge price here. They also have time to go make another move if needed.
