Leafs Acquire Jake Muzzin

The handedness might not be what we were expecting, but the team acquired a legit top-4 defenceman that fits this system pretty well without giving up Kapanen, Johnsson, Sandin, or Liljegren. I think that Dubas did pretty well here.

I certainly agree with this cogent assessment.

Hopefully he is placed in the top 4 defence and Hainsey gets moved down and Dermot gets moved up as well.

If Babcock insists on playing Zaitzeff and Hainsey on every penalty kill, it may not make much of a difference unfortunately.  Time will tell....

I wonder what the Leafs would have needed to add to get LA to retain $1-2mil here. Running some numbers, it's somewhat plausible to keep Gardiner next season if a) he signs for only $6mil max, b) the Leafs dump Zaitsev and Brown and don't take salary back in the trades, and c) all the RFAs sign team friendly rates (Matthews $11M, Marner $9M, Kapanen $3M, Johnsson $2M). If all that happened, the Leafs could ice a cap-compliant 20 man roster. That leaves no cap space for healthy scratches though, which is where that retained salary would have really came in handy. Anyway, just spit-balling.

This is the unspoken second part of the Tavares deal -- namely, a promise (implied or explicit) that the Leafs would go for it right away.

I see more moves coming down before the deadline.  If someone offers up a similar package for Gardiner, we will be back to single Jake on the roster.

Your second point kinda contradicts your first.

Not kinda.  Totally.  But I do cognitive dissonance all the time.

Looks like a great acquisition, he can hit like a truck, and is rated higher than Doughty's this season, however what do we do with Jake, do we let him go for nothing like JVR and Komarov or do we get a 1st round pick with either some good player or prospects?
Who believes Rosen can do a better Defensive job as Jake, he is 4th in D scoring in the AHL and just watched him score a beauty a few game back?  What does Dubas do?

Trade Gardiner and use some of the assets to trade for Gudas.

Boom, cup contender.
What about Pesce? He's only 24 and signed for 5 more years at 4 per or is that too long seeing Sandin and Lilypad would hopefully be ready to go before then. This is a great move tho.

I would look to trade Gardiner but I wouldn't give him away. It has to be a quality offer or you keep him as an own rental. I haven't seen Rosen play too much but by all accounts, he's ready for the big show. I can't see him being worse then Jake defensively but on the offence side, I don't think he can match him. Should be interesting to see what Dubas does.

That still leaves a giant hole in our D3 spot. Either Muzzin moves back to the 2nd pairing and we've got Rielly-Hainsey again, or our 2nd pairing becomes Dermott-Zaitsev or even worse/more likely Hainsey-Zaitsev.

If the Leafs are serious about winning the Cup this season, Gardiner isn't going anywhere.

I think I'll double down on the back half of my assertion above.  By adding Jake M. the Leafs have placed themselves in a position where they can unload Jake G. for some significant fraction of what they just paid.  They get something for a UFA they almost certainly now are not going to re-sign while only losing assets on the margins.  And bringing Muzzin in while losing Gardiner could arguably leave them slightly improved for this year's playoffs.

It does seem a little strange that after Gardiner got the rough treatment from the home crowd he sat out the final two games before the break and we got to see Dermott play with Zaitsev.

And honestly, does anyone think Dermott looked out of place?

Call me crazy but I hope they trade Gardiner for a first round pick and then they are able to flip that first rounder to the Canes for Ferland.

He is the type of player the Leafs need in the playoffs. A tough, physical winger who has the offensive skills to go with the sand paper.
