Leafs acquire Plekanec

It's not a question of what the market is.  It's a question of whether you should spend a 2nd for on this particular position, and for a pure rental.  The rationale being peddled (by Shilton) is that Babs "never fully trusted" Moore.  If so, that's just another inexplicable Babcock quirk because Moore was not a problem in this lineup, ever.

Of course, they may recoup that 2nd before the draft etc etc but as of this moment I think they burned it for a modest upgrade where there was no big issue to begin with.

Incidentally, it's great that Plekanec can play the PK but again, since the Leafs are 2nd in the league already should that be the priority?

Valuable dept are centre and the feel good of Bobby Baun's grandson. Not bad. Plekanec freed from the challenge of the Montreal number one centre experiment club. Hope they use this to flip Bozak for assets.

That question only exists because of what the market is. Again, I appreciate the position that the Leafs shouldn't have made an upgrade but if they were, this is what the price was going to be.

I think the priority was depth at C and having some roster flexibility if the team has to go a month without Matthews.

Nothing wrong with adding depth ever, especially down the middle. I think adding Plekanec actually gives us 2, 3rd lines now. That's a significant upgrade in my books. Pleks to wear #19

Obviously, would have preferred to give up less, but prices for vets are high this deadline. Giving up a 2nd plus some depth prospects is no big deal to add a quality C

We'd always like to give up less but I'm betting there was more then the Leafs after him. We still have SJ pick which is higher then ours so it's all good.

I'm not really down with this, if this is the only thing they do.

If it's part of something else, then I'll have an opinion on it.

My biggest surprise about this really nice deal for both teams is that it was Rychel being shipped over instead of Gauthier. Probably could've worked the pick down to a 4th if we gave up a francophone centre.

Well, the important thing is you keep us in the loop.

It is not very likely that this move paves the way for unloading JVR for a 1st and a top prospect is it?

Don't see how it makes it any more or less likely, really.

I guess you could make the case that trading JVR is effectively saying that the team isn't too concerned about the playoffs this year in which case the Plekanec deal doesn't make a great deal of sense. You're not going to trade a 2nd round pick for a depth piece if you don't want to make a push into the playoffs.

That said, you can still flip JVR for McDonagh indirectly so who knows.

Why this deal sucks:
The Canadiens now have 4 2nd rd picks to reload with at the draft.

Why this deal is good:
- competent shutdown centre for the bottom 6 now gives us 2 first lines and 2 third lines where, at the time of this writing, only Bozak's line would need to be sheltered
- another PK option; we can now roll L-R units in Plekanec - Hyman, Komarov - Kapanen/Brown
- other than the pick, which is the going rate, we did not lose anyone of consequence from the pipeline. I liked Valiev, but he has no shot at relevance here with Rielly, Gardiner, Dermott, Borgman, Rosen, Marincin in the pool; Rychel is a non-factor

Barring any further lineup changes up front:
Hyman - Matthews - Nylander 18-20 min scoring first line
Marleau - Kadri - Marner 16-18 min checking first line
JvR - Bozak - Brown 10-12 min sheltered scoring third line
Komarov - Plekanec - Kapanen 10-14 min checking line, and can soak up tough assignments off of Kadri's shoulders

This does sort of entice me, if I were GM, to be more willing to deal out JvR-Bozak for the currency to land McDonagh or the like, which would adjust the lines to:

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Marleau - Kadri - Marner
Johnsson - Moore/Aaltonen - Brown
Komarov - Plekanec - Kapanen

What I'm wondering is, doesn't McDonagh's contract expire at the end of next season?  So he would be a two season rental, essentially.  I could see the Leafs burning up some prospect capital to give them two good runs at the cup.

I looked at his stats and you guys are right, JVR is terrible defensively.  I think Plekanec could be an upgrade over JVR actually.  Maybe the Leafs will take the king's ransom for JVR and then parlay some of that to try to acquire McDonagh.  We'll find out soon enough.  When is the deadline?  Noon tomorrow?

It also would make sense to try and re-sign McDonagh in a way that it doesn't really for JVR. The rationale for trading JVR is based, partly, on the premise that an extension for him doesn't really work and they'd risk losing him for nothing. McDonagh, though, is a legit top pairing defenseman and exactly the kind of guy the Leafs would want to invest in once their big three are signed.

I dunno, teams are probably on to Gauthier by now.
