Reality is that Dubas was never all about any one type of player. He brought in and traded both types of players throughout his tenure.

His defense was atrocious, always. The grit was non-existent. Sandin/Dermott/Brodie/Reilly/Barrie/Gardiner are all very similar styles.

People read the intention to attempt into the quote he gave at the press conference before Shanny walked away. The line was “perhaps the path needs to shift slightly and needs to be adapted slightly” and he then added, “You get in between persistence and full belief versus being a little too staunch and rigid.”

Dubas was gone within 72 hours, and Shanahan’s first calls were to the Core 4 assuring them that they weren’t going anywhere.

And then he started interviewing GMs

Sandin is what the Leafs need, a puck moving mobile D man. If Cowan works out its still a good trade though.

No..he was ready to break up the core 4 and there were 2 guys that could have been moved at the time. 88 and 16. That's why he asked for more autonomy.

Will someone ask why replacing Shanahan makes a difference now? If Treliving oversees the team, shouldn't he be able to shape the roster with or without a president? He said they made great strides under Shanahan - 9 straight playoff years, - so why is moving on from Shanny the right move now? Will he just admit that Shanahan was the defacto GM?

Why wouldn't moving on from Shanny now make sense? If Pelley is more hands off and just acts as a rubber stamp then I'd think that's a good thing.

Agreed here. And I we don't know the extent to which Shanhahan had influence. Without more info we don't really know which deals Shanhahan had what level of influence on. I think for now all we know for sure is he wanted to keep the core together.

The Buffalo Sabres should hire Shanahan. Brendan isn't a fit everywhere but that franchise needs direction from the top. He'd be a good fit there.
