https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2015/09/20/toronto-maple-leafs-announce-first-round-of-cuts-16-cut-51-remain/

The Maple Leafs have sent a group of ten to the Marlies and six to junior. Heading to Marlies camp: Eric Faille, T.J. Foster, Justin Holl, Justin Johnson, Max Nicastro, Jack Rodewald, Matt Rupert, Ryan Rupert, Nikolai Skladnichenko and Brady Vail. Returning to junior: Stephen Desrocher (Oshawa Generals), Cody Donaghey (Halifax), Martins Dzierkals (Rouyn-Noranda), Aiden Jamieson (London), Michael Joly (Rimouski), and Lucas Peressini (Kingston).

No real surprises here.  Can't wait to see the action tomorrow.  Sucks they have to play 2 games at once.

As expected, another round of cuts happened today: http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=780205

The following four players have been released from training camp and reassigned to the Toronto Marlies, who open camp September 28: Casey Bailey, Frederik Gauthier, Brendan Leipsic and Josh Leivo. The following three players have been reassigned to their respective junior teams: Travis Dermott (Erie), Andrew Nielsen (Lethbridge) and Dmytro Timashov (Quebec).

A little less than I figured, but Babcock has talked about wanting to still have 2 full teams. Timashov and Dermott both impressed in their small sample of showings, but with 0% chance of making the team it's best they get their junior seasons started.

I'm a little surprised at Timashov being cut, sure he was always going back, but he was one of their better players in both games he played.

Looked good.  Made a nice impression and now goes back and will be expected to lead and dominate. I don't have a problem with it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Q is already a week and a half into their regular season. Quebec plays their 5th game tomorrow. So that might have played into their decision. I'm sure if it was Leafs training camp vs. QMJHL training camp they would have kept him here for a little longer.

The OHL and WHL regular seasons both begin tomorrow.

Yeah, me neither, just a little surprising.

I thought they might have kept him for the upcoming back to back and then sent him home at the end of the week.

Good point, doesn't hurt to keep the Jnr teams onside.

Time for Frattin to go down

He's clearly not making this team (at least there is no reason for him to).  He doesn't carry trade value and his performance really doesn't justify NHL opportunity.  For all of his AHL scoring, I would take Boyes and Glencross over him.

The Leafs already have Kadri, Bozak, JVR, 1/2 a Lupul, Winnik, Komarov, Spaling, Parenteau, Holland, Matthias, Panik, Grabner who should be locks.  That's already 11.5 forwards.  You also have Arcobello and guys like Casey Bailey, Zach Hyman, Soshnikov.  There really isn't any room in the organization for Frattin at this point.  I would much rather have Boyes and Glencross as the guys sitting as the 13-15th forwards who rotate in and then get traded at the deadline (or at least continue to maintain an element of depth to not get overeager in promoting young guys to fill gaps).

Looking at that list, I wonder if they look at another Grabner type deal.

Currently I have the opening roster as:
Matthias-Kadri-Lupul
JVR-Bozak-PAP
Komarov-Holland-Grabner
Winnik
plus two or three of: Spaling/Panik/Boyes/Glencross/Arcobello

So I don't see any space for Frattin there, not even as the extra forward. And the Marlies will be pretty stacked also.  It seems his most likely future is either trade throw-in or waiver claim before the season is out.

Good thing Nonis gave him a 2-year contract for absolutely no reason.

Recapturing the magic of 2013 isn't a reason?

13 points is not magic.

Yes. Nonis really did a terrible job of guessing at how the 2015 free agency market would play out in the summer of 2013.

Thought Leivo might get a longer look, but other than that, no surprises, really.

Yeah for a guy who was the first forward call-up last year, and played a number of games, not being in the top 46 is a little disappointing.

Thought Leipsic would stick around a little longer as well considering his season last year.

I wouldn't read it as an indication that Leivo is somehow behind Clune or Froese on the depth chart, rather that the team is more familiar with Leivo and generally have a sense of how they're going to use him this year.

Maybe this has something to do with them not having the conditioning that some of the other players have, or something....I don't know, really, but I can't believe that Leivo would be sent back before a Richard f'ing Clune.
