Missed the game, see Marner got another 2 points tonight. Hope he's turning the corner

Tonight Stephen Burtch had an interesting look at Marner and Kane during their first two seasons in the league and Marner is producing at almost exactly the same clip despite playing almost three minutes less a night on average.

If you look at tonight?s game from the shot attempts, it looks like Boston dummied us around. Some of it is score effects sure.

However, watching the game, I didn?t really feel that clench that usually comes with watching the Leafs protecting a lead. McElhinney wasn?t swimming out there and the defense gave him clean looks for the most part. He probably robbed maybe 2 really good chances, but they were otherwise routine saves. It was just a really nice and solid ugly road win.

Bozak?s line playing against AHLers gave us all the offence needed.

Great back to back win! Burying those points this week after that tough stretch against some very good teams.

Good win and effort.  This team really comes together when it needs too sans Auston.  Happy to see Marner getting his second two-point night.  Solid netminding by McElhinney and smart PKng when needed.

Overall, a satisfyingly well done back-to-back win!

I saw things differently.  I saw the Leafs getting outplayed in their own zone for most of the game, but able to score a few on Rask.  Shot differential at 39 vs. 24 was pretty indicative of who was controlling play.

I saw McElhinney outplaying Rask, and Boston going 0-6 on the PP (which is related to McElhinney's play), as being the most significant reasons for them getting away with a 2 points last night.

I agree, Frank. I thought play was pretty even in the first period, tilting towards the Leafs. They pretty much Carlyle'd the rest of the game though.

Remarkably, Marner is now tied with Nylander for points.

I cant figure out why Nylander has such a low shooting percentage.  Just luck?

I agree with herman that overall they didn't seem to be in danger of blowing the lead, especially in the 3rd, which was a really good show, but they got totally outplayed in the 2nd and were fairly lucky to keep Boston scoreless then.  McElhinney was superb, though, no question.

Great question.  He's gone ice-cold in terms of scoring goals.  He had one good chance last night that I recall.

This is why you keep all three of Marner, Matthews and Nylander.  On any given night, any one of them could have an off night, but any one of the three can be a game breaker.  So you play the odds and go with the chance that all three are hopefully not going to go cold on the same night.

Go to this part:

? Thought this was a good example of the kind of subtle, smart reads Ron Hainsey makes in the defensive zone. If he goes for the puck here, maybe he wins the race and the ensuing puck battle, but if he doesn?t, he?s in no-man?s land and Brad Marchand is all alone in front. He identifies the potential danger, backs off, and lives to fight another day.

If you YouTube for Hainsey, you'll only see his crazy uh-ohs when Pittsburgh got trapped for what appears to be an entire period. This video clip in the article is super unsexy and is exactly what I want from a 'defensive defenseman'. My hope is that Zaitsev spends more time with Hainsey and picks up more of this stuff.
