I can't wait until they remove fighting from hockey, and in turn, meatheads like this. I wonder if this guy could even carry the puck for 3-4 strides? I doubt it.

If you dont like it go watch figure skating.

Okay?

Or I can keep watching and trust that the NHL will one day progress enough so that it isn't the only major sport that allows fighting as part of the game.

So your saying that for the last 100 yrs they have been doing it all wrong, oh and the fans you have never seen them cheer during a fight. stop being a little girl and whinning about a game that is not broke.

I don't begrudge you your opinion on fighting in hockey but I think your second sentence is exagerration to the point of lunacy.  These are professional hockey players, they skate and handle pucks on a daily basis.  I know you're likely trying to make a point, but even the worst player in the NHL would make normal hockey players look foolish.

I've played either pickup or beer league hockey with a few NHL fighters over the years.  One of them was Bill Huard.  Let me tell you, his hands were amazing, at least relatively speaking (should I say, relative to the company he was keeping on the ice at that moment).

Tell that to Derek Boogaard's family.

Stuff it, you barely literate moron. PG's posted here a lot longer than you and he's entitled to his opinion.

I pretty much agree.  I don't so much mind the spontaneous donny brook, but it's the Colton Orr's of the world that has no place in the game.  These goons can't skate, can't handle the puck and serve no purpose other than to fight.  It needs to stop.

It's called evolving. Lets just leave it there. There is so much wrong with your post that we should just drop it (and I don't mean your usual grammatical and spelling errors).

Well, when you put it like that yes, I have no doubt this guy would skate circles around all of us and deke us out of our pants and all that.

I just mean relative to his peers, can he make an actual hockey play in an actual NHL game? We'll find out soon enough I guess.

Even though I'm currently miffed at you Nik, I am applauding here at my desk.

I wasn't cutting up how the game is played. I simply said I cannot wait until they remove fighting from the game (and I'm confident they will...)

The fact that you enjoy that aspect so much makes me feel even stronger about my opinion against it :)

That alone is reason enough to consider a ban, at the very least...

And yes, fans get on their feet when a fight breaks out.  But people crowd around when a fight breaks out on the street or at a bar/club as well, but people don't make the case that assault/fighting should be legal because "people enjoy it so much."

Here's Carlyle's words on why fighting is here to stay....

?I just think it?s part of the game that?s there day in, day out,? Carlyle said. ?I don?t look at the statistics as far as it spiking. I look at it as a way that certain people approach preparing your team. And when there?s confrontation and contact, at times those do spoil over into fighting.

?I think it?s a part of the game that won?t go away. There?s people that want it out of the game, but I don?t think it?ll go. I just think it?s a fact of life in the NHL. If you?re going to go out there and you?re going to run around, it?s going to force confrontation. Sometimes people try to take advantage of your skilled players. And you have that deterrent.

I dont enjoy it per say, but is has been part of the game for so long, I just except it. and its one change I would not want. I enjoy a good fight between players, but calling a goon on the ice to fight I dont care for. so getting rid of the goons is ok, but not the fighting, it will only bring the sticks into play. if I offended you with the figure skating thing I am sorry, I though you could take a joke. we know Nik cant.

I'm not convinced fighting in hockey is going away. Fighting doesn't detract enough from the game to justify removing it. At the end of the day, everyone has a choice whether or not to drop the gloves.

To the poster who mentioned Derek Boogaard. Fighting is the only reason Derek Boogaard even had a job in the NHL. It's not really fair to blame the sport or the league for condoning it when it was Boogaard's choice to make his living that way.

Fighting is up this season. Roughly half the games have at least 1 fight.

.68 fights per game is ahead of the original 6 period in the 50-60s which was about .25 fights per game. It's the highest level in at least 10 years. It is about 55% more than last season.

I suspect it's intentional to help bring US fans back from the lockout.

It's going to be around for a while yet. For health reasons on what we're finding about about concussions, I think it's doomed long term.

I can't say I haven't watched them nor that I haven't enjoyed the odd fight over the years. But I can say that I don't think I'd miss it.

Fighting may be allowed under the rules in the NHL but name calling and personal attacks are not desired under the rules here. Hopefully, folks can cool it.

If the goons were eliminated, I mean the guys with limited hockey skills just put on the ice to fight, who would be the best fighter in the league? Lucic ?

Lucic or Clowe.  Chris Stewart fights heavyweight goons as well.  I missing someone put can't place who it is.

Your bolded is exactly the crux of the issue.  I won't pursue this argument further but if you read the NYT series on his life and death, they present some pretty compelling evidence that his "choice" was enabled by several teams along the way, not the least of which were the Wild and the Rangers.
