I said to wife ...ha scored on their own net.

She asked if it was our team.  I said nah, McCabe left the team years ago.

You remember the headline in the Star (I think) the next day?  Was it something about Stupid Face?

Could be I hear the boys from Overdrive mentioning Stupid Face when talking about McCabe.

I really do get what the Leafs are trying to do by keeping control of the puck, but it doesn't work when you're doing fly by's in your own zone once you lose the puck. Saw an awful lot of it in the game last night. There was also a lot of reaching for pucks. Every team is allowed bad games, but that's two in a row where the free wheeling nature of the team could of potentially hurt them. Do that against Boston or Washington and you're not coming back from it.

It?s not great, but they were also the games before and after the Christmas break - games that tend to be sloppy. And, one of them was an afternoon game, and those are often adventures. You?re right in that it can?t happen against better teams, I just wouldn?t be too worried about these particular games being poorly played.

I'm generally not too worried about individual games being poorly played. It happens. And you're right, they did sandwich the Christmas break.
What does worry me is that despite absolutely dominating for a good chunks of the game last night, complete defensive breakdowns evened the game out. That's not a good trend.

Well, the good news is that the offense is alive so we can often outscore the breakdowns, at least against weaker teams. The defensive structure can be worked. If it never improves, well then this team won't go far this year. Mikheyev is a big loss, he was developing into a guy who drives play in the offensive zone. Time for someone else to pick up the slack.

PP is scoring goals but man, I hate the drop-pass-on-every-rush style. Maybe they'll get better at it with time, but I don't remember them having much trouble gaining the zone using the old style. Seems like a lot of guys are standing still in the neutral zone once that last guy gets the puck.

The 4 on 3 powerplay at the start of OT was also painful. Nobody moving other than Barrie at the top. Really easy to play the triangle when the four posts are stationary.
