Sort of. Starting with 70 of their own picks over ten years, the Leafs made 67 picks in that time. That's not good for a team with as little on-ice success as the Leafs have had and their spotty collection of second and third round picks isn't great but, then again, what the second and third rounders they have had produced probably shouldn't have anyone thinking that's the reason for the team's lack of success.

Scouting has obviously been an issue, as well, but, not retaining and/or acquiring picks has certainly compounded the issue. A team with 1 playoff appearance in a decade should never have less picks than the average in that same span. That's just not a recipe for success.

True. I was not trying to argue that the Leafs over the last ten years were a model for success. Just that attributing their lack of success to a lack of or overeagerness for trading their draft picks is probably less on point than attributing it to where they were picking in the first place and their relatively poor scouting.

Apparently the Leafs have been confusing the 2nd round with the 1st intermission.  Hopefully this year the Leafs can pick up some second rounders in some deadline deals.  But, knowing that they give up so many picks and this needs to change, would you trade the Leaf's first rounder plus a prospect to move into Strome position?  Maybe Gardiner + 1st assuming the Leafs are picking 7-10??  I would consider that...

EDIT:  Oh yeah, 4-2 Devils, with Clarkson taking 3 bone-headed minors after Elias gets (farther) under his skin.

Possibly they convinced themselves that more late round Kaberle types would be developing.

I dunno about that. I think Gardiner + Zacha (for instance) is probably more valuable than Strome on his one.

New Jersey is so unbelievably bad right now.  The Leafs are wasting some pretty good rebound opportunities.

And oh joy, George Strombolopoulos here to give his awesome analysis.

Yup. Tonight is an epic battle between the stoppable force and the moveable object.
