I dont understand why the goal was called off. it was kicked towards the net, and bounced of the NYI defenders foot into the net. Please explain

I believe the rule says the puck can't be kicked in directly or off of a player. As for why the rule is that way, reasons I guess.

Winnik leads all forwards in toi, almost 6 mins on the pk, oi!

Kadri needs about 2 years of strength/conditioning and hockey growth to catch Tavares of today.

Nice game!

I only caught the last 10 mins, but did Randy's 7 dmen and 11 forwards work out with Kessel subing in on 3rd line?

Seems pretty self explanatory. You can't kick a goal in.

The rule specifically says that it doesn't matter if it bounces off of another player. If the kick is what gave the puck the momentum to enter the net, it's no goal.

Can a player kick the puck into their own net?

Yeah. All of the rules for pucks entering nets only apply to putting it into the other team's net. Outside of things that would be a penalty, there is no illegal way to score on your own net.

Just 17-5 shots against in the third so far...

Probably looks worse than it is. Teams up by 3 goals generally tend to naturally sit back.

True, but there's sitting back and there's getting dominated, and once again it felt like a standard brief explosion of Leafs potential sandwiched by a lot of mediocrity at best.

It's why when people look at the possession stats they try to focus on the stats when the game is either tied or within 1 goal because generally all teams leading tend to get outshot and hang back when they have a big lead.  It's not a 100% always going to happen thing, but it's always worth keeping in mind when you see a shots-against number that becomes quite lopsided once a team is 2-3-4 goals up.

Just look at Vancouver-Dallas last night: Dallas scored 5 goals on 13 shots to start to take a 5-1 lead just over 21:00 into the game but Vancouver outshot them 46-28 on the night and 34-18 over the 2nd and 3rd periods.

Good game,

Kessel - Boz - JVR good
Lup - Kad -Winnik invisible
Clarkson - Kom - San -Excellent
Holland - Good

IMO team was good, second line needs to step it up. Lup's stop taking penalties, although they seemed very
weak call to me. Dias leaf fan.

Yays:
  • high-slot goals off the cycle from Clarkson (very high; probably the longest goal he'll ever score) and Polak(!! I was about to yell at him for pinching 3 times, but the Islanders weren't interested in engaging him)
  • Bernier staying sharp after score-effect kicks in in the third
  • Kessel being Kessel; he does need to find more ways to get open other than sheer speed though
  • Tavares is strong, nifty, and smart; he would be a good template for Kadri and Nylander to emulate
  • Whoever dropped Cal Clutterbuck off that draw in the d-zone (JvR?)
  • TSN Broadcast team (Ferraro) for pointing out how the Leafs were exploiting Halak's staggered butterfly drop

Nays:
  • Holland needs offensive linemates; he looks like he has good possession instincts and skills, but no one to pass to
  • Panik seems to play below his size and speed
  • Outside of Winnik, Kadri's line was more of a negative factor than positive; usually due to losing faceoffs

Nice effort by the Leafs, again held together by Berniers heroics, man if he keeps playing like this he will be a candidate for Vezina and lift the Loafs into the playoffs on his back.
Good on Kessel, JVR, Komorav, Winneck, Clarkson.. Now we need Kadri to show up.
