Leafs @ Jets - Jan. 2nd, 8:00pm - TSN4, Fan 590

I mean aside from the sloppy second (see what I did there) the first and third were alright

He's a good fill in guy. I suspect if Sandin wasn't overseas he might be up.

If Rielly or Dermott went down I'd agree, but not sure with the Muzzin injury. Like I said, Marincin's getting shutdown and PK minutes. Don't think Sandin would be getting those.
I thought they said earlier this year they want to keep Sandin's games down so they don't have to protect him for the Seattle draft. Not likely he sees many games this year.

Sandin will be exempt from the Seattle draft regardless. He does burn off a year of his ELC if he plays 4 more games though, but I think there's upsides and downsides to that.

The amount of criticism this team gets for going on the road and doubling a team up with six goals...

Honestly, I don't care if the shots were 100-6 for Winnipeg.

That was kind of weird by Maurice. He pulled the goalie for almost 2 minutes there, then had a faceoff in the Leafs zone and puts him back in. "meh this isn't working go back in net"

I'm not going to claim Marincin is brilliant or anything but he's been solid again tonight.

When you have a #7/8 defenceman who can sub in on your shutdown pairing and PK while not looking completely out of place then you're in decent shape.

People love to rip on him. I'd have to guess I'd take him over most 7/8 guys in other organizations.

Kinda makes you wonder how a defense of

Rielly - Sandin
Marincin - Holl
Dermott - Liljegren

Would do. It would only cost $11 million. We?d be saving 6-7 million over our current D and could spend it on an area of need by maybe swapping Kerfoot out for a 9-10 million center or something. Who is a UFA next year?

Ah yes, Tavares is getting credit now for Nylander?s offensive surge.
Well Willy isn't doing it by himself. They're clicking along with Kerfoot who has played great as well. I think Keefe should get the credit for benching his ass when his effort wasn't good. Seems Willy and Kappy got the message.

Some numbers from NST:

5-on-5 CF% was just 55% for Winnipeg. Considering they were chasing the Leafs all game that doesn't seem that bad. Score/venue adjusted the Leafs were actually ahead 51/49. Leafs had the advantage in scoring chances and high-danger shot attempts. Leafs were also ahead in expected goals.

Heat map shows that a lot of Winnipeg's attempts were coming far away from the point which Andersen can handle with ease:

Those are the numbers. Having watched most of the game as well, there was definitely a portion where the Leafs took their foot off the gas like I said earlier in the thread, but for the most part they were still by far the better team.

Like I said, I think Marincin's an ideal 7/8 guy, but the days of saying he should be an everyday top-6 guy are probably over. Also think that asking Sandin to play that high in the line-up this early (or ever) is pushing it.

I was actually wondering what their previous longest point streak was when I posted this GDT but felt like too much work to look it up.

Hard to say until we see him for real.
