Game Notes

TOR
?Hyman's back from his suspension, hopefully with a lesson learned
?Andersen's probably in, his numbers settling closer to his historical norms(2.50, .925%)
?9 more shopping days until Christmas. If you're wondering what to get me, how about this inexplicably goofy Mitch Marner blanket?

FLA
?I copied the format for this GDT from 2013 which explains why it still has Roberto Luongo listed as Florida's starting goalie so I'll try to fix that later and...oh...really?
?Hoffman is off to a good start with 15 goals and 29 points in 30 games. That should add some spice to the episode of Law and Order he'll eventually inspire
?The Panthers have lost 4 straight, dropping them to the bottom of the division. Also, their name is stupid, their logo is stupid and they don't even play in Miami.
? I just made up some names for their scratches. That should be it for me on GDT's, CtB returns next week. Be nice to dogs.

Stream Opt-Eh, hockey's great and all but why not read a book?

Washington Black by Victoria-based Author Esi Edugyan is the genre bending tale of the titular character, a slave on a plantation in Barbados who gets caught up in an adventure of scientific exploration but takes time to dwell on more personal matters of growth and identity that still have relevance today. Winner of the Giller Prize, a Short list selection for the Man Booker Prize and one of the New York Times 10 best of the year. Nik Recommends!

Considering all that talk a couple of days ago about consulting the sports science dept. regarding how many games it takes to get a player's heart rate steady at game levels (12, btw), it's small wonder that players like Leivo, Carrick, and Corrado had garbage showings last season when used as spare tires.

And considering how Ozhiganov has had some uneven showings the past week or so, Hainsey's age + apparent importance on the PK, and Andersen's overall workload, there really should be a more consistent cycling of Holl, Marincin, and Sparks into the lineup. It makes little sense to wait until an injury derails things before trying to integrate your pressbox bodies effectively.

Tonight should have been one such night, especially with the players' moms on the road trip, to get everyone out on the ice at least once.

I agree herman, esp. re Andersen.  Away game at a weak opponent, Sparks should be in there.  One of Holl or Marincin too.

All fine and dandy but coaches coach to win now and I don't see better options sitting in the pressbox. Even tho he gets too much ice, Hainsey is better the Marincin and Holl in Babs eyes..So who you take out, Dermott? He's had some ups and downs the past week also.

There's an argument to be made that Hainsey is not better than Marincin (or even Holl), so if the coach is into winning now, and winning in the long run, there's little to be gained by sticking to your oldest guns and watching them break down from overuse.

My argument here to rotate and keep them all fresh, especially for the early chunk of the year where the team is still evaluating before settling into your playoff roster. Even if Hainsey or whoever is ultimately the best option of the bunch, the worst that happens is that he plays 50ish games of the season and has more in the tank when it really counts. Your subs at that point will be 20-30 games in and know they were given ample opportunity and need to give more should the injury opportunities arise.

What's more likely to happen with this injury-subs-only routine is that someone inevitably gets hurt and whoever comes in to fulfill that role needs nearly a month to settle in and actually produce. The players the Leafs should be rotating are perfectly situated to do so: a very veteran player (not on an iron-man streak), ELCers, and waiver eligible RFAs looking to prove something. There's no way you can prove anything to the coach by being the best bag skater during the extra practice session.

Refs letting a bunch of interference go, I've counted six times already that blatantly warranted a penalty, everytime a Leaf comes through the neutral zone with speed and dumps it in the Florida D are running clear picks to slow them down.
