Leafs @ sens - Dec. 7th, 7:00pm - CBC, SN 590

The top line for the Leafs has really been the best line by far for either team so far tonight. They are generally playing at a higher level than everyone else. Or maybe I just have my blue and white goggles on.

That's actually a good point. It's too bad there wasn't some sort of stat that combined shots a goalie saves and shots a team blocks. And maybe even shots a team has that misses the net.

Except, even then, I'm distinguishing it from a shot that misses the net.

Well then you'd also have to try and figure out how to take out all the shots that were saved and blocked that wouldn't have hit the net had they not been saved or blocked.

Seems relatively easy. A player takes a shot that hits a player on the opposing team in their own crease it's a save/shot on goal and not a blocked shot.

Oh we're still only talking about shots that are blocked in the crease? Well I'm not really sure the one or two times that might happen in a game is going to mess with the value of using shots for as indication of offensive pressure.

And it's that sort of cavalier, devil may care attitude that will leave you relegated to the small room of the Sloan Analytics conference.

Isn't a save just a blocked shot by the goalie? I think you're making it too complicated. There's no distinction for goalie saves based on his location.

But that's what I'm saying, it's needlessly imprecise. If shots on goal should measure what the offensive team does it shouldn't just be when the puck happens to hit the goalie.
