Leafs to announce captain

I can't see why they would wait until December unless they are planning on Matthews as the Captain.

Nor do I, unless they feel they should wait until the court case moves along, is dismissed/settled in some way and they may be hoping this happens after the next court date of Oct 22.

I don't know if Paul Hendrick knows anything (although I guess he's an MLSE employee) but yesterday he mentioned on Twitter the over/under for Leafs naming a captain was December.  Maybe this Matthews thing is making them delay the announcement until things mostly blow over?  We'll see I guess.  I would have thought today was the day.

Last time someone asked Babcock when they'd name a captain he promised/joked it'd be before Christmas, Henny was just riffing off that.

I was one of the few that voted Tavares in the poll, so I somewhat saw this coming as a safe vote. However, after watching the Leafs Blueprint, it should be Matthews. Tavares is so void of personality, that I have trouble picturing him as the face of the franchise. The captaincy is primarily symbolic, so why not have someone that you can get excited about? Someone who represents the future of the NHL.

They changed their direction while contemplating during a half moon.

Tavares is as boring as they come but Matthews doesn't exactly have an exciting personality.  Not to mention what Carlton just mentioned.

And how does he "represent the future of the NHL" any more than Tavares?  It's not like Tavares is on the verge of retirement.

The thing that everyone will forget about in a couple of weeks?

I think Matthews wants it more and I think Tavares is better equipped with dealing with not being chosen as Captain. I'll be disappointed If it's not Matthews. If they go with Rielly I'll accept that too. Give it to the longest tenured guy and a backbone of the team. This is only Tavares 2nd season as a Leaf and I think that matters.

Exactly. Amazing how fast it's already not a story. If the Leafs picked Matthews before the moon landing, it will be Matthews still.

In fairness it's only Matthews 3rd season and Tavares is presently slated to be here the longest going forward.

No surprise given the company line of making wearing the Leaf be about good players being good people; the consummate professional who chose home to make his final push for the biggest prize is still a good story. The bulk of the Toronto fanbase outside of the interwebs (and even on the twitters) is still very old school and quite enamoured with the local boy with lunch pail work ethic who just happens to be super skilled.

The fact that he's an anodyne android makes it far less likely MLSE will be caught with their pants down again.

Perhaps I'm naively optimistic, but I picture the future NHL as having people, not robots.

I would be completely on board with Rielly as the captain.
Yup and same with Matthews. I think Spezza's getting an A. Don't know why, just think he will be this year's Marleau.

Tavares does have a personality though, he just can control what the cameras see (via electromagnekinesis).
