Leafs Training Camp Opens

Not sure what's up with keeping Prust around...seems like a weird move unless they're going to make some room for him as 13th forward.

They're still going to have to do something with Leivo seemingly out only for a couple of days.

Mainly to frighten me, apparently.

I hope Brown sticks, but we lose the least loaning him down.

Don't think I've been this excited for the start of a season COMBINED with a simultaneous deep Blue Jay playoff run since 1994  :)

22.    TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
THIS WEEK: 22 LAST WEEK: -
Even as a 30th-place team last year, the Maple Leafs were a middling possession team, so if they could maintain that level and start reaping rewards (ie. better percentages) from their dramatic skill upgrade ? including No. 1 pick Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, Connor Brown and more ? because they still have decent support for those forwards with James van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov spread throughout the lineup. Frederik Andersen and Jhonas Enroth should provide decent goaltending, leaving defence as Toronto?s most pressing concern. Jake Gardiner and Morgan Rielly are capable, and rookie Nikita Zaitsev might be able to make a major contribution. For Toronto to do well, they probably need the likes of Martin Marincin and Connor Carrick to handle significant roles. If they could, then maybe the Leafs could be surprisingly competitive.
Key Injuries: LW Joffrey Lupul (sports hernia).

Mirtle's annual look at how each opening day roster ranks in height, weight, and age:

The Leafs are the 2nd youngest team in the league right now, with Columbus being 1st.

Quite the change for the Devils over the past two seasons.  Two years ago, their average age was 31.0, more than two years older than second place Vancouver (28.8).  This year, 22nd overall at 26.9 years.

31? Whoever was managing that team 2 years ago must have been the worst.

I'd like to wait until we are half-way through the season and see the age metric weighted by ice-time.  Which teams have young guns who are actually eating up a lot of ice time?

I think that we'll likely see pairs of JVR-Kadri, Bozak-Marner, Matthews-Nylander, Martin-Laich throughout the year. The 3rd spot on those lines can mix and match. Michalek and Greening could lose their spot to Hyman and Soshnikov but I think they'll really have to put in a poor showing at camp for that to happen. I'd like to see those kids in there but I don't see it happening to start the season.

On defence personally speaking I think I'd like to see something more like Rielly-Zaitsev, Gardiner-Carrick, Marincin-Corrado, Hunwick-Polak. A lot of it will depend on how Babs decides to form the top pairing. He has 4 lefties and 4 righties, but I just don't think he'll trust any of those righties to play with Rielly right off the bat. But maybe Zaitsev playing top pairing minutes with Russia could change his mind about that.

That's a similar roster to what I expect - though I think Brown, Hyman, and Soshnikov are all battling for the same spot right now (not necessarily in the lineup, but on the roster).

Does anyone think that Michalek and Greening might get waived to the Marlies?

After the lousy trade-deadline returns this past season, I'm not as sure they'll give them a spot on the big club if one of the younger players outplays them, which I think is a very strong possibility.

:)
