Leafs vs. the Media

It's not only the losing!  Getting paid millions of dollars to not perform is a huge factor too!

If Phaneuf and Kessel were paid half of what they're earning, I would not complain nearly as much!

Just look at Clarkson, at $2.0M, he's still a Leaf, and, not vilified nearly as much!

So players have to take less then half market value to not be harassed and slandered? That's lunacy.

Complaining about a players on ice effort etc is one thing... but talking about their personal private life is another. Families, kids and future contracts/endorsements all ride on a person's reputation. If it was left to lie then you could have other teams actually basing weather they acquire Lupul on information that was false and damaging. Noone will want a guy in their locker room that they cannot trust to not touch a fellow players wife/gf and the absolute lack of respect needed to do such a thing. Rightfully so.

The media and fans as a whole have gone too far in this tech age and actually believe that they are in the right because someone makes x amount of dollars. That's simply not true whatsoever.

ESPN: Sharp: Rumors have taken toll, considering legal action

Wasn't far off the Lupul/Cuthbert crap from what I loosely gather. Sharp's parents and family were calling him, upset, etc.

Like the TSN tweet, over the top, hurting innocent family members.

Here's an update on Burke with stuff like this:
Canoe: Brian Burke continues quest to uncover alleged online defamers
The Calgary Flames executive won a default judgment in B.C. Supreme Court against five online posters last week, according to the Vancouver Province.

The 58-year-old has won the right to serve legal papers to the aforementioned online commenters using the message boards he claims he was defamed on.

As a result, the hunt continues for anonymous online users NoFixed Address, CamBarkerfan, Lavy 16, Tulowd and Naggah, all of which failed to respond to the former Toronto Maple Leafs general manager?s lawsuit.

The court also ordered each of the defendants, whose real names remain unknown, to pay Burke damages and any legal costs he accumulates as a plaintiff.

Burke?s legal proceedings began in April when rumours surrounding his dismissal from his position with the Leafs became the subject of much gossip.

Burke claims he was defamed in online comments accusing him of having an extra-marital affair with sports reporter Hazel Mae of Rogers Sportsnet.

Take note social media: BC Supreme Court agrees with Burke and Burke is winning.

Good. People feel invincible when they're hiding behind a computer screen. I don't know if there is any way to track those people, but I hope there is.

A close friend of mine was involved in a relatively minor disagreement on a forum like this one (different subject, though). Unfortunately they were dealing with a psycho. My friend gave out a little too much info on the forum (learned a valuable lesson, though) and the psycho wound up sending slanderous emails to my friends employer (basically took real messages that were posted and edited/doctored them). Also was calling the house and leaving nasty messages. Lawyers were contacted but they didn't feel there was much that could be done. Fortunately the police got involved and it stopped.

There's an easy answer to all this: don't use social media.

I think we've reached the point where that is looking more & more inevitable. You hear about coaches in other sports instituting bans on social media, why not in hockey?

One little tidbit here, Bernier said that when he was traded to the Leafs they actually urged him to join social media.

That sort of sounds like one of those things that a guy like Leiweke would push while being somewhat ignorant of what it might mean in Toronto.

MLSE is owned by media conglomerates. Of course they would want free content generation. Anything the players say turns into revenue.

Just once I wish the Leafs could be owned by an old Pizza magnate who was desperate to see another cup win.

Many of the Leafs and Marlies had twitter handles. (I was recently reminded as I just removed a bunch of stale ones - guys who had moved on).

I doubt they'll entirely kill it. They'll just learn from this and "control it" better.

During the Quinn years, MLSE (partly or significantly due to Quinn) developed quite an adversarial relationship with the media. Since then, they've been trying to take some control back.

Getting the two biggest sports networks to own you doesn't hurt - protects them quite a bit going forward.

But during the interim period, LeafsTV, ML.com, etc popped up and started producing some of the media we got to consume online. And they got serious about calming things down and significantly affecting the media fans got to consume.

I'm sure they see social media as a marketing tool when used in the "right way" for their purposes - that can help control "their  message". They'll school their athletes accordingly.

In order to buy the Leafs, he'd have to sell an awful lot of pizzas!  $1.15 billion worth and counting!!!

Typical cart before the horse thinking by MLSE. What exactly is the benefit of social media for them? Doesn't really put anymore money in their pockets.

I just think a coach is going to come along that doesn't want the team on there because of the needless headaches. Social media has already helped make this season more of a total gong show then it needed to be.

Clarkson wasn't villified at all in the media!!! Not before the trade not after... in fact, after he was traded, many talking heads were going on about how KESSEL ruined his opportunity in toronto by being a ice hog during powerplays!

It always amazed me that during his time here, Clarkson was handled with kid gloves for some reason.

Welcome A/14 to the site, always like to see new blood coming on board.  Lupul tweeted the challenge, probably available on twitter.

I think it's as that Globe writer wrote about Kessel today:

Clarkson was decent to the media so they gave him plenty of rope.

With Kessel's somewhat vague criticism, lacking specifics a number in the media wondered about after his venting, he's probably going to become a bigger media target - because of his broad brush.

Pat Quinn butted heads with some of them in Vancouver and Toronto and they darn near went to war with each other.

New blood?  That's funny, because, I was a member of penaltybox.com.  My post count back then was in the hundreds, if I remember correctly.  I just have not been on this new site very often the last couple of years.
