Luongo

Wow. I don't get what Canucks fans are thinking. Most want to ride the guy right out of town and hope the team rids themselves of his contract, not to mention both parties seemingly want to go through a divorce, yet they expect the team to hit a home run in the assets that come back? Yeah, not happening. As already mentioned, they better brace themselves for the disappointment that will ensue.

Wow, are they ever going to be disappointed when it all shakes out.

One of the deals they seem to expect from the Leafs is Schenn, 2 of Kadri/Colborne/Ashton, 2013 1st, 2012 2nd and Lombardi (apparently, he's the only cap dump contract they'll accept ::)) for Luongo and maybe Malhotra. It's really pretty hilarious.
I literally almost choked when I read this, are they all smoking meth?

Canuck's fan opinion of Luongo before he actually requested the trade: BUM, he's not worth anything anyway
After trade request: 7 1st round picks

Sound familiar?

Yes, because Sens fans are the paragons of level headed thinking.  How long again until Peter Regin turns in to the next Daniel Alfredsson?

Probably. Who knows? Though, in fairness, a good portion of Leafs fans over there haven't been much more realistic, and expect to be able to get Luongo for MacArthur, Komisarek and a mid round pick. I just find the Nyucks side that much more hilarious because of all the mental gymnastics they're doing trying to get around the problems with the contract, the lack of a real trade market and limited trade options, etc.

Canuck fans would probably be pretty happy if they got a 30 goal scorer back for Luongo.

I'm sure they would, but, a 20ish goal scorer who has a career year in his 3rd season after the trade after scoring a total of 40 in the previous 2? Probably not so much.

Still a young top 6 forward who's career low so far is 17 goals. Beats giving him away like some of you seem to think the Canucks will be forced to do.

Sure, some think he is going to be given away, and some think he is going to cost a bundle.  The price is probably somewhere in the middle.  This is no different than any other fan base when it comes to trades.  They all overvalue their own players and undervalue the ones that are being offered.  Look at the flames board when the Phanuef trade hit.  A lot of Flames fans felt really ripped off.  Nowadays, there are some Leafs fans that consider that trade a bad trade.

Does it? Let's really look at what the Heatley deal was at the time. Ottawa sent Heatley and a 5th round pick to San Jose for a 2nd line winger (Michalek), a cap dump/reclamation project (Cheechoo) and a 2nd round pick. Considering the differences in the contracts, is that all that different from, say, MacArthur, Lombardi and a 2nd? I mean, MacArthur's a young top 6 forward who's career low for goals in a full season is 16.

It doesn't sound like Gillis's back is as up against the wall as Murray's was.

Well, we don't really know, because it hasn't played out in public as much and the situation is a little bit different, but, we're looking at a situation where he has to either trade one of his goalies or risk losing Schneider for nothing next summer.  Like Heatley, Luongo has complete control over which team he goes to, but Gillis doesn't have the bonus looming over his head (which is both in his favour and a detriment - at least, with Heatley, it meant the team acquiring him didn't have to pay as much in real dollars). Heatley had a more significant cap hit, but Luongo has a much more onerous contract. The potential market for Heatley is also larger than the potential market for Luongo - every team in the league could have used a 40+ goal guy, but only a handful are really looking for a starting goalie. Obviously, it's not a perfect comparison, but the situations are similar enough that the return the Canucks are likely to end up with should be similar to what Ottawa ended up with after the Heatley trade.

I dreaming I know but I will say this;... If Luongo does wind up a Leaf, I really hope Leaf fans by in large give him a fighting chance here. It goes without saying that his mental toughness is in question and I'd like to see folks stow the booing at least for the short term. Know what I mean?  :-\

If I said Lombardi or Armstrong + maybe Franson or Ashton +a 3rd round pick, how close would I be to nailing the appropriate return? Basically a dump + a decent enough young player who can chip in immediately + a top 100 pick.

Going by the Heatley deal framework, probably pretty close.

It's been speculated that Vancouver isn't interested in a soft deal ( we've talked about this before ) if so neither of the fat contracts would apply but yeah, it's not going to be a lot more than that if it happens.
