Marlies Talk 13/14

Funny thing, I was thinking about a defenseman playing forward in a Bill Berg fashion.  Then I looked it up, he did play defense as well.  Only remember him as a LW.

My thinking was say you had a fourth line of say Paul Ranger, McClement, and Orr... which sucks... but if you had say Gardiner and Reilly on defence ready to jump on a rush or even lead it, it would generate scoring chances.  I've seen a rushing defenseman in the past turn the opposition's defence inside out.  And what better then a real D-man to fall back?

Brent Burns is another defense-to-forward success story: 14 goals, 30 points, +20.  Of course, playing with Thornton, Pavelski and Marleau helps a bit.

He was actually drafted as a right-wing. Played his whole junior career there.

What's the deal with T.J. Brennan?  I see he's ripping it up stats wise in the AHL this season.  40 NHL games of experience, i guess nothing noteworthy since he didn't stick with an NHL club.  Is he just a late bloomer at 25?  Any chance this guy is part of the Leafs defense in the near future?

TLN wrote up an article on him yesterday: http://theleafsnation.com/2014/2/10/the-sleeping-giant

The author suggests that waivers are the reason he hasn't been called up, because if he comes up and goes back down he would have to be placed on waivers where he might get claimed by another team. But that's not exactly the case. He already cleared waivers at the start of the season so if he's recalled from the Marlies he would have 30 days or 10 games before he would have to clear waivers again. That should give him enough of a try-out period for the Leafs decide to either keep him with the team or send him back before having to clear waivers again.

I think the reason he hasn't been called up is pretty simple: the Leafs don't view him as better than the other 8 defencemen they've had on the team. Maybe if they didn't keep Rielly he would have gotten a chance, but I don't think any of us are complaining about that decision now.

How long do the Leafs have him under contract for?

Good stuff about McKegg here:

Greg McKegg is starting to turn heads in his sophomore season in the AHL.

The 21-year-old centre, who has logged major minutes for Steve Spott?s Toronto Marlies recently, scored two goals on Sunday in a 4-1 win against the Oklahoma City Barons. It was his second two-goal performance in his last five outings.

?He?s now turning himself into a legitimate NHL prospect and I?m sure there?s a number of teams, not only the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the 29 other teams that are seeing that as well,? said Spott.

McKegg has played top-six all season with the Marlies because he is pegged by Leaf management as a potential contributor offensively at the NHL level. His season, however, didn?t start strong and it wasn?t until the calender year changed over that his production started to pick up.

Since January, the St. Thomas, Ont. native has produced seven goals and 19 points in 17 games for the Marlies, with one call up to the Leafs in the process.

?It?s great to see the confidence that he?s playing with,? said Spott.

In 42 games the 62nd overall pick from the 2010 NHL draft has 13 goals and 35 points.

I never got too excited about McKegg during his junior career, even when he was posting insane numbers. But it's great to see him producing at the AHL level. He likely needs another season in the AHL where he produces at a consistent level before the Leafs give him a real look.

Its time to have a Keg McKegg party?man I am having a bad Olympic hangover?..where is my luge, where is my biathlon, where is my downhill, its like withdrawal.

Forward lines from this afternoon's game:

D'Amigo Holland Abbott
Leivo McKegg Kozun
Duco Smithson Biggs
Devane Ryan Staubitz

Getting Holland and Kozun on the Marlies gives them a huge boost offensively. And that's been their weakness all season. If Holland stays down and Ashton and/or Smith goes down too they could go on another big Calder run.

Ya the thing that frustrates me most about Carlyle is his seeming refusal to rid the team of useless Frazer M and Molten Orr.  4th line  Holland, McClement, D'Amigo..  and give them a few more minutes to relieve a very fatigued  Phil Kessel (LOL) and  JVR

Also D'Amigo has 9 goals in his last 10 games.

Kenny Ryan has also showed his ability to put up multiple points.

In this case, his stats can be a little misleading... He's been a player that has been shown minimal ice time, yet he posesses some promising skill, and has for some time.

The other day, he got 3 assists in one game, and has proven he can deliver an accurate shot in the past. Really, this year, is one of his worst statisticaly, but when you watch him play, he seems to always be in the right place at the right time. He's a great two way team player.
