Marlies Talk 13/14

Might be a 'tweener' - too good for AHL, not good enough for NHL.  But he's a FA and there was talk that he really wanted to make the NHL this year from camp, so he's probably pretty upset he's named best D and never got into a single game all year.

I dunno about parsing his mood but, IIRC, the Leafs gave him some decent dough with the Marlies and a prominent role. Hopefully he looks at it as a well paid education and appreciates the opportunity and experience.

$50,000 increase from his last deal.  Mirtle said during training camp Brennan was desperate for a chance on the big club.  Could leverage a bigger deal with a better chance somewhere else probably, because if he didn't get called up with the Leafs defensive trainwreck not sure they ever will call him up.

I would imagine there was some communication about that, and he himself acknowledged that elements of his game needed work. They may have a role for him next year, and he may take it, it's pretty hard to say without some context from the people involved.

Would it surprise me to see him catch on with another team? Absolutely not.

The list of the AHL defenseman of the year award winners doesn't have many players who have had notable NHL careers.

But TJ could be a  noticable upgrade on Franson whom packaged with a few other players may bring a good prospect or very good draft pick(s).

I doubt it. The biggest preventing him from being a full-time NHLer already is his defensive play. He's been a liability at the NHL level when he's had the opportunity and hasn't provided the kind of offence Franson has. Realistically, at best, he's a slightly smaller version of Franson, and, even though he'll be significantly cheaper on the cap, that's just not good enough.

He still is relatively young, don't you think the coaching he has received this past year pluse enourmous playing time can make him a better all round player.  In any case Franson will be traded in some sort of package, perhaps Riemer and someone else for a centre of some ilk.

He's not really that young, though - at least, not to the point where he likely he has much, if any, development left. This was his 6th professional season. He may be as big a liability as he once was, but, he's unlikely to have made enough improvement for the Leafs to give him a full time spot in the lineup. There are better options in house already.

Decent piece by Buffery today about it, TJ said there was no bitterness and that he understood the situation ( due to lack of injury to call him up )

1st round schedule is out. Best of 5 with the higher seeded team having the option to host the first 2 or last 3 at home. Marlies opted for the last 3.

Western Conference Quarterfinals ? Series ?G? (best-of-5)
3-Toronto Marlies vs. 6-Milwaukee Admirals
Game 1 ? Fri., Apr. 25 ? Toronto at Milwaukee, 8:00
Game 2 ? Sat., Apr. 26 ? Toronto at Milwaukee, 8:00
Game 3 ? Thu., May 1 ? Milwaukee at Toronto, 7:00
*Game 4 ? Sat., May 3 ? Milwaukee at Toronto, 3:00
*Game 5 ? Sun., May 4 ? Milwaukee at Toronto, 3:00

I watched the Marlies last game and was hugely impressed by Carrick and Leivo, also Herzog.  Also Kozun is a real speedster and may have some potential. Brennan and Nodule also impressed.

With a lot of new guys recently signed, it should be really interesting to see which ones stand out during this playoff run. I'm sure management is excited to see what some of these guys can do when they are thrown into the fire, so to speak.

I hope to see at least 4 of them on the team next year with one trade/free agent siging for a decent Centre. Five new players is all it will take with a new coach.

The younger guys brought on just recently likely won't into any playoff games. They are there moreso as the teams Black Aces. This is what one Marlies reporter expects the line-up to look like: http://kylethereporter.com/2014/04/22/ashton-expected-to-return-for-playoffs-potential-lineup-for-game-1-against-milwaukee/

Leivo-McKegg-Ashton
D'Amigo-Holland-Carrick
Broll-Smith-Kozun
Devane-Smithson-Staubitz

MacWilliam-Holzer
Percy-Granberg
Brennan-Knodel

Spencer Abbott's hurt, but could be back soon.

Interesting. I would have though Gauthier would have been given a spot somewhere in that lineup.

That's a pretty tough line-up to crack, especially as a centre. Maybe he could play ahead of Smithson, but then you lose your best face-off guy and three of your top-4 centres are under 23.

Yeah. Even with Abbott sidelined, there are just too many guys and not enough spots. Curious as to why Nonis thought it was prudent to sign all these guys so quickly. My first thought was to bolster the Marlies team for a deep playoff run. With more injuries bound to happen, I suppose it still could have been the reason.

Well, everyone other than Gauthier (and maybe Loov - the rights to European players is sort of a complicated area, but, I don't think he's coming over until next season any way) had to be signed by June or the Leafs would have lost the rights to them.
