Marlies Talk 13/14

Well, everyone other than Gauthier (and maybe Loov - the rights to European players is sort of a complicated area, but, I don't think he's coming over until next season any way) had to be signed by June or the Leafs would have lost the rights to them.

Gauthier and Herzog haven't actually signed contracts yet. Both are on ATO. Verhaeghe technically is too right now but he has signed his ELC which will start next season.

edit: Sorry, Gauthier actually signed his ELC much earlier this season. But he's with the Marlies on an ATO right now.

You and your pesky details.

Okay, I legitimately forgot about Herzog and Verhaeghe, but, at the same time, I don't think they were ever in serious consideration for getting playing time in the playoffs. They were basically given the typical end of season reward for guys who had really good juniors years.

Probably just want them to be around the pros for a bit, get a taste of what's expected, etc.

That's exactly it. Why let them go home after their junior seasons to play xbox when you can put them on a professional hockey team and extend their season? It really can't hurt. And who knows, it's not 100% certain that they won't see playing time. Stuart Percy got into a few playoff games when he joined the Marlies late a couple of seasons ago and nobody was expecting that. Gauthier could be one injury away from a spot.

I know I am really myopic when it comes to the Buds but they really do seem to have a fine group of young prospects, some proving out to be a bit higher in the food chain than expected.
Conner Brown, Verhaege, Herzog, Leivo, Carrick, Abbot and not to forget Holland, all playing very exciting hockey and the 8th round pick this year may yield a potential starter. Lets at least hope so.
Heck I can see at least 4 of the D men on the Marlies employed within 2 years with the big club, if a guy like Gauthier can step up at Centre and a new coach, we may just be starting something special and believe it or not we have Burke to thank for most of this base.

Marlies with a convincing win. Some of these lads look really good, Carrick a surprise, and TJ needs a look with the Leafs next year, cannot deny the offensive skills.

Yeah. Nice start!

And D'Amigo looks primed for his 3rd straight, mediocre offense regular season, superstar in the post-season performance:

AHL Regular Season - Over his last 3 years 0.523 PPG
AHL PostSeason - Over the last 3 years 0.889 PPG

Just to clarify, he did score 20 goals in 51 games this season, which is a 32-goal pace. But yeah, the way he steps up in the playoffs has been something else.

What I like is the way the organization is actually holding onto and giving their picks/prospects time to actually develop in a very nuturing environment. For the first time in ages we actually have at least 4 or 5 guys who could move up to the big club very shortly.
This is very encouraging.  And the poop is that the 8th pick could actually move into a starting role as well. I know we are stuck with Clarkson, he may just become the highest paid 4th liner in history.

Jerry D'Amigo is a great example of how prospects should be brought along and groomed for the NHL. The Leafs are finally getting it right.

Oh, absolutely, he had a fine year, just wanted to highlight just how much better he does in the postseason.  It's odd really.  I'm not sure how impressive it is because you have to wonder why he can't score like this in the regular season.  It's not like the guy floats around the ice from what I saw of him in the NHL this year.  I'm sure he gives that extra little bit to his shifts in the postseason that you just can't sustain in the regular season but that shouldn't be enough to make that kind of difference.

It appears so but the proof will be the signings by Nonis this summer as to whether there will actually be spots for them. He hamstrings the team with more long term contracts that don't allow the kids to break in and it's the same old same old. If they actually want Holland they have to move Naz if they sign Bolland. I'm sure they'll sign a defensive C to replace McClement as I don't know if they will hand that 4th line slot to a Marlie. I personally hope they skip Bolland as he won't be reasonable.

The Marlies are very impressive especially if you take into account that they played without Holland (most skilled player), Abbott (leading sccorer), Ashton (always on tear when down with Marlies) and MacWillian (very dependable D). Something tells me they play the system well and execute it even better. They also demonstrate confidence, just look at the patience while socring those empty net goals. In game one, from behind the goal, nice and easy. WOW. Or in game 2 Sam Carrick  move in the first. Loving these kids. Fun to watch.

I agree with the Jama man, Bolland will clog a spot for at least 4 years and want way to much dollars.  I want to see at least four of these guys with the leafs next year. They have that youthful energy that is fun to watch.

Just wondering - what are the injuries to Holland, Ashton, Abbott.  The pre-series reports had all three as expected back either in Game 1 or 2.  Any reason for them not playing aside from the Marlies trouncing the Admirals in Game 1 and having a quick turnaround for Game 2?  That's a lot of offense out of the lineup with those three...especially when you factor in that they would be replacing guys like Frazer McLaren, Brad Ross and Tyler Biggs.

D'Amigo with 5 points in 2 games.  Learn how to score in the regular season you lazy bum.

Marlies added OHL scoring leader Connor Brown to the roster today. Carrying a whole lot of bodies right now in AHL playoffs.
