Marlies Talk

If Mueller stays on the second line, Boyce would be effectively replacing Foster (from last year) to form a checking line with Scott and captain Hamilton (from the current 2nd line) - which should continue to be a very good checking line that can score. I like Scott & Hamilton together.

These are the reported Marlies lines tonight:

D'Amigo - Colborne - Crabb
Caputi - Zigomanis - Kadri
Wilson - Boyce - Hamilton
Mueller - Acton - Scott

I'm a little surprised that Scott is on the 4th line. I haven't had the chance to watch any Marlies games this season, but I seem to remember he and Hamilton were quite the pairing last season. Could just be a temporary thing though.

In the Marlies games I saw last season (15 complete?), Scott-Foster-Hamilton was my favorite line as a checking line that could chip in with some scoring. One of the best I recall of Leafs AHL teams ever. Maybe I just caught them on good nights for their line but they impressed me.

I don't know much about Wilson. He looked like a AHL vet middleweight who can play some.

A fill in for Rosehill to provide some enforcement? except he's got more skill but maybe is on the smallish side for a heavyweight (if his stats are accurate). I don't really know for sure and didn't notice him much in the few games I've seen this year.

Having brought him up, I'll be looking more closely in their next few games. I didn't even realize Wilson was on their roster until October - missed his signing completely.

Colborne opens the scoring ... unassisted, stole the puck, forehand-backhand-forehand deke and  puts it away!!  :)

Marlies lose 2-1. Shots were closer than the game. The win was deserved in my opinion though the Marlies got very close to tying it up.

Decent interview with Colborne from a few days ago on the Marlies site:

Colborne is clearly breaking out, and from the detailed scouting reports I've read, he is demonstrating he can do just about everything at a top-end level now and is willing to do the dirty work to execute in the AHL.  He has corrected a lot of the things he wasn't able to do last year, such as using his size and new found strength (offseason bulk up) to go into areas he wasn't always willing to, taking hits to make plays in the defensive zone.  The only thing that still seems to be lacking is a top gear to his skating he can use to separate himself from defenders.  Could be what holds him back from being a legit #1.

But the key progress step of becoming dominant in the AHL is very encouraging.

Good to hear. It sounds to me that if he never finds that top gear, he still has the body type and is showing the skills to become a Andreychuk type winger... Obviously I'd want to give him the opportunity to fail as a center at the NHL level first but this is what I'm thinking nevertheless.

Interesting to see Naz not have any points in two games.

If he consistently shows the new found willingness to get bumped to make plays and go into dirty areas, and use his size to his advantage, he will be a pretty successful NHL player.

The top gear might come later. It did for Sundin (not comparing him apples to apples.. just a trait of bigger guys who skate well, but not always at the top end) much later in his career... sometimes its just intensity and confidence that come in time vs. a physical trait or limitation.

He's not that slow. He's Usain Bolt compared to Andreychuk.

Marlies are playing in Texas tonight, and Colborne has the only goal of the game so far (assisted by Frattin).

Seems like he's starting November off well, too.

EDIT:  Finished with a goal and an assist in a 4-3 Texas win.

Kadri with the OT winner and 3 points tonight and named 1st star in the Marlies 4-3 win over Albany.  Rynnas given the start in place of the red hot Owuya.

You're right, did not realize how good Owuya had been in his Marlies call-up:

1-1-1 1.52 GAA and .939 SV%  in 4 games.

@TorontoMarlies Colborne is very close to returning. Boyce and Caputi...not so much. Dale Mitchell is inching closer to a return as well.

Caputi again? Is he the Tim Connolly of the AHL?

Caputi can't catch a break.

I feel bad for him partly because he's been so active on Twitter. He's said a lot of nice things about people inside and out of the organization. I feel like I know more about him than ever our captain.

St. John's has sold out every home game this year. Crowd should be vocal when the Marlies play there against the IceCaps tonight

I'm happy for St. John's. Sad time when the Marlies moved to TO.
