Marlies Talk

Minor note: Brayden Irwin was sent down to Reading in mid-November, played a game there and now is also no longer on Reading's roster ...

St. John's has sold out every home game this year. Crowd should be vocal when the Marlies play there against the IceCaps tonight

I'm happy for St. John's. Sad time when the Marlies moved to TO.

Yup. I thought the Fog Devils would've done well there, but I guess it's not a junior hockey town. Regardless, I'm glad there's professional hockey there again. I had good memories attending baby Leaf games.

Marlies won 4-3 in OT against St. John's - Kadri with 2 goals and 2 assists.

I was at the game, and Kadri was all over the ice. He had numerous chances and every time he had the puck turned in to an opportunity. However, he played a bit too much by himself. Can't fault him after an effort like that though. Aulie, Meuller, and Zigomanis also had pretty good games.

Marlies have done what 5 other teams were unable to do on the rock this season.  Go in and sweep the high flying IceCaps in back to back games.  They did so with a 6-3 win tonight.  Kadri with a goal, Mueller a goal and an assist, Finger 2 assists and captain Hamilton a goal and 2 assists.

The win moves the Marlies one point back of the IceCaps for the league lead.  The Marlies are on a 6-0-0-1 streak.  Not bad for a team that has also felt the affect of the rash of Leafs injuries by losing Colborne, Crabb, Scrivens and Holzer to the big club and have had there own injuries to deal with.  Owuya has been absolutely outstanding in goal.

Aulie did not play tonight. Most likely in anticipation of being called up to replace Gunnarsson.

Wouldn't they have already called him? He'd be dead tired taking a flight tonight from st johns to Anaheim.

Little off topic here, but the Fog Devils struggled from day 1 because their marketing was almost non-existent when compared against the Leafs. They never really educated the fan base on the league and the product.

Well that was the word floating around last night, as Aulie sat out the game, and no word on any injury.

I assume he'd just stay in Toronto if called up though. Holzer might play tonight and then Leafs fly home. Aulie could play Wednesday if they needed him I suppose.

Keith Aulie's numbers not reflective of strong play with Marlies
"The numbers are really skewed," Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins said. "He's been on the ice for some goals that he had nothing to do with. And it's not like he's out there to get points. He's played very well for us."...
But he failed to earn a roster spot with the big team in the fall. "I never really bought that Keith Aulie had a bad training camp," Eakins said. "It's just that [rookie] Jake Gardiner [who has played close to 20 minutes a game] was unbelievable."

My impression about the training camp is similar. Gardiner won the job with great play rather than Aulie losing it with bad play.

My impression about Aulie's play with the Marlies is a little different. He says he was disappointed getting sent down. That's understandable. Who wouldn't be? But he wasn't too hot when they started the season. Of late, his play seems to have improved. Aside from some debate on the Perry goal, I didn't have any issues with his play last night.

Kadri lights up Newfoundland

"At the conclusion of Friday?s 4-3 victory in St. John?s, Marlies coach Dallas Eakins sent Brian Burke a message.

?Forget about the fact that he had two goals and two assists,? Eakins informed Burke. ?Even if he did not have any points, this was Nazem Kadri?s best game since he?s been here.?

Let's hope he can build on it.  Always good to see your prospects excelling when you send them down to work on their game.  The test for Kadri will be when he's called up, can he make the jump and be a good NHL player?

?He?s been very impressive the past four games.?

Saw Eakins interviewed recently about Kadri. He talked about the need to "build a body of work" in the AHL to help his future consideration for being called up. I think Kadri started a little slowly when he got down there but it's very encouraging to see the building of the "body of work" is underway.

Saw Wilson with the media talking about 'meritocracy' being used to determine NHL ice time. I can't recall in recent Leafs history when it's been employed so quickly within a game and so widely throughout the lineup.

Credit to Wilson, Eakins & Burke for actually sticking with such a system throughout the franchise of talent. Fairly dangle a carrot and a lot of folks are going to try to reach for that reward. Every player in the franchise has the incentive of more ice time or a callup if they play well.

I think Kadri is a pretty determined young man. When he does arrive, he'll do so with a much more complete two way game that may add years to his NHL career if he sticks with it.

Owuya is really tearing it up with the Marlies so far, completely stole the starting role from Rynnas. Do you think Rynnas will be going to the ECHL instead of Owuya? I mean, how do you not keep him up?

Too many goalies in the system. Someone will be traded eventually.  Could be Rynnas, could be Scrivens, who knows maybe Owuya?
