Matthews or BUST

Still, even within the right context what Laine is doing is pretty impressive. Matthews too, he's looked pretty good, but Laine's definitely made it a fun conversation.

Its an interesting decision.  Based on their style of play it would be like trying to decide if you would rather Jonathan Toews or Alexander Ovechkin.
Different players that bring different elements to a hockey team.

I still lean Matthews on this one but:

Laine - 6G 4A 10P in 6 games
Matthews - 3G 3A 6P in 6 games
Finland has a much better team though.

And Laine's leading that much better team in goals, points, and shots on goal (massive lead in that category). That's insane for a kid who just turned 18 years old last month. Now Matthews is tied for the lead in scoring on his team of misfits, so that's impressive as well. But, even though this is just a small sample size, the way Laine's showing he's the best player on a team with some pretty good NHLers on it is a pretty big statement on his part.

I mean it's nice that Laine is lighting up the Hockey Murderer's Row of Belarus, Germany, Hungary, France and Slovakia.  8)

Connor McDavid has 0 goals against those same teams.

Laine > McDavid.

Conversations over. I'm closing this thread.

I'd be cool with drafting Laine and immediately flipping him to Edmonton for McDavid.

Yeah, but only if we do with the PIT pick.

All this Laine vs. Matthews talk has me thinking about all those recency bias accusations that were leveled on guys using the WJC tourney as a decider for who was the best prospect.

Isn't using this tourney the same thing?

...and another thing, with these guys being prospects that are improving year by year, isn't using the most recent showcase more relevant?

Except I don't think anyone is looking at this tournament in isolation. If you're looking at Laine right now you're looking at his big time performances in the WJC, the Finnish playoffs(where he was MVP) and what he's doing now. The Pro-Laine argument is being based on what he's done over the last six months or so.

Which position do we need more?  Centre or left wing?

IMHO, we need a number one centre more, so, we should draft Matthews.  No?

The Leafs need a player that can consistently take over a game, or a series.  They need a player that the other team needs to draw up a plan to *try* and stop them.  The position that they play doesn't really matter, as it's the talent that the player is bringing to the table that the Leafs need.

Is it Laine or Matthews?  We haven't had a number one centre since Sundin left.  So, to me, it's Matthews.

A centre has a better chance at taking over a game because that position has a bigger role to play than the left winger.  Having said that, I don't discount the skill set that Laine possesses, so, I wouldn't rule out him being a major factor on the number one line.

Choices, choices.  In Hunter we trust.
