I don't think I saw anywhere what stage the cancer is in?!  Anyone?

doctor never said. I watched coverage on various news channels and at least two (CTV and Global) pointed out that the doctor specifically did NOT mention a stage...

They asked the doctor specifically about the stage of cancer he was in and the doctor wouldn't answer the question.

Another Dr was on City right after the announcement and he said that due to the size and that it's spread would lead him to believe that it's stage 4, very advanced.  ??? That's what I heard. Again, not Ford's Dr.

680 News just sent out a Breaking News alert:  Ford is to start Chemo in the next 2 hours.

Yes, that was a breaking news alert from one of Toronto's bigger media entities.  Will they be sending out alerts each time he takes a dump, too?

Well he still is the mayor of the biggest city in Canada, so it's definitely big news.

Really?  After yesterday, when we found about the cancer and when they already said Chemo would start today, I was thinking a separate alert to say what time he was starting it was pretty much overkill.

I think there's a line between the Rob Ford saga being big news and every individual update being big news though. The whens and wheres of his chemotherapy don't really matter or weigh on me.

I agree. This is overkill for sure, and it's really the news using what should be Rob's private and personal health information to drive viewers to them.  Classy as always, media.

Ford released a statement to the citizens of Toronto today, which prompted the news report.  In that statement he indicated his chemo would start in a few hours.  The media is always going to report that, and Ford wanted them to report it since he released the statement.

Sure but, and I don't want to speak for Rick necessarily, I think the point is that there are some who feel that no matter how much it might be SOP these days the Media's job isn't to just pass on press releases in the hope of garnering eyeballs.

Kudos to the Fords.  They certainly know how to get publicity, even in the times of significant health issues.

Rob Ford's statement (in part):

...thank you to the good people of Toronto.

I am humbled by your overwhelming kindness and support.

It means the world to us that so many of you have reached out to show
concern and offer prayers.

With the love and support of my family, my friends, and the people of Toronto ? I will beat this! I am determined to face this head on and return strong for
my family and for my city.

For the past 14 years, as Councillor and as Mayor, I have worked hard to bring about change at City Hall and make life a little bit easier for the average hard working people of Toronto.

I was not alone in this, my brother Doug was by my side, sharing my vision, fighting for the great people of Toronto. I never could have accomplished what we did without him.

Last week I asked my brother to carry the torch and continue the work we started together.

I?m happy that he?s agreed. Toronto needs Doug Ford as Mayor.

YOU, the people of Toronto, have been with me since day one. Now I ask you to throw your support behind Doug.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and well wishes.

But most importantly I want to thank my lovely, caring, wife Renata who has been with me and by my side from day one.

My heart goes out to anyone facing similar health battles, and to your families who are standing strong behind you.

Don?t ever give up. Be strong, stay positive and have hope ?just never ever give up. God bless all of you and all the best.

He sounded quite weak on the soundbite that was provided yesterday.

I hope it's not a situation similar to Jack Layton's where you see him on TV one day and he looks like he is doing well, then months later he looks like his time is near.

It's funny because in reading that I think the author is sort of guilty of what he's accusing other people of. By simply deciding that anyone who uses drugs is a drug addict he's, I think, not really affording addiction a ton of respect for what it is.

I don't offhand remember if Ford ever claimed actually being addicted to drugs but having a "drug problem" and going to rehab isn't the same thing as struggling with addiction. Even if he did, saying "I'm an addict" can be a way to deflect personal responsibility. Especially for a public figure like Ford.

Standard retroactive social justice activism to point out how just how morally superior the author is to everyone else.  I'll pass on that.

Though, to be fair, addicts generally have a tough time admitting to being so until they're genuinely serious about getting help, and, I'm not sure Ford was when he checked into rehab. They do often use less stigmatizing terms like "having a drug problem" and such up until that point.

Sure, but my point wasn't that Ford was or wasn't an addict. It was that you can't just assume he is from what we know and that so long as nobody is even claiming he is, it's not reasonable to look at reaction to him as a society-wide referendum on our views of addiction.

I mean, if nothing else, the one thing that he absolutely has not earned is the benefit of anyone's doubt.

With Rob's cancer treatments I expected him to lose some weight but he looked bigger than ever. Perhaps he is on predisone or something else to keep him upright, that might bloat him.
Now we can all go back to the big snore that comes with being a non Ford Mayor in T.O.

I really could have sworn that this city had a significant number of left wingers at one point. I have no idea what happened there.

Ah well. At least we didn't elect the joke candidate.
