Men's Olympic hockey

I'm still seeing a little bit too much of the North American/NHL style of just getting a guy in front of the net and then taking so-so shots or passes into the middle of the ice in the vague hope that a bounce or a rebound will go their way.

Barring him falling apart later in the game, I don't understand why he wasn't considered the starter over Carey Price.  Luongo really hasn't done anything in the last 4 years to suggest he shouldn't be the starter and we won Gold with him (or in spite of him) last time.  Price is a good goalie but he hasn't really won anything outside of juniors and that playoff run as a 19 year old coming off his good junior year.

Carter made up for a pretty rough game against Norway.

I think that was the general feeling going into the games even if Babcock didn't come right out and say "Luongo is the #1 guy". I think giving Price a game against Norway was the right decision regardless of who ultimately gets the nod in the elimination games just so he's got fresh legs in case of an injury or a need to make a switch in-game.

Jeff Carter having a great game.  Hat-trick.

Carter and Marleau seems to be the pairing of the game tonight.

Canada has been a little undisciplined with the penalties since they took the lead.  That is definitely something that could hurt them against Russia or the US.

The BBC has a feed for this game. Imagine enthusiastic soccer announcers calling a hockey game. It's glorious, way better than Hughson and Simpson just from an excitement perspective. I could watch that all day.

Isn't that a pip!

Yeah, my favourite announcing bit so far has been:

"LETHAL FROM SIX INCHES, JEFF CARTER!"

I suppose, although it's not like Marleau contributed a ton to the goals Carter scored.

In total no, but I think that both Carter and Marleau have gone hard to the net and fought for those pucks in close has certainly helped.  That seemed to be complementing well and the Austrians really didn't have the defensive ability to win those battles in front of the net.  It wasn't a Kessel-JVR type pairing where they anticipate plays from each other but they were certainly both being very aggressive at htting the front of the net.

So who starts against Finland? Price or Luongo?

Like I stated prior to the start of today's game, I think Luongo carriers the load the rest of the way. Nothing in today's game that made me think otherwise.

Canada dominated Austria, but Luongo made a few nice saves and put up a shutout on 23 shots.
Canada outplayed Norway and Price gave up a not so great goal on 20 shots.  To me, that decision shouldn't really be a question.  Luongo won gold last time, he played well in his start.  Luongo should get the start and unless he falls flat on his face, he should be the elimination goaltender.
