Michalek waived. Leafs claim Ben Smith from Colorado.

Best case scenario:

Michalek refuses to report to the AHL, after striking a new deal with the KHL and all his cap hit magically goes away.

One can dream.

Blue Jays care about their press people enough to limit their unlimited consumption of cheapo high-fructose corn syrup fatty.

Maybe now they are going to try and move Bozak.  Smith adds to the centre's.  They could slot Kadri in to Bozak's role, or Matthews and juggle the lines that way.  Holland, Brown and Komarov on that third line wouldn't be terrible.

Leipsic ( 9 pts in 5 games with the Marlies ) and Soshinikov are still on the farm as well.  So maybe this is a precursor move to something else.

I would love to Bozak moved but would be surprised to see any takers unless Leafs eat some salary (yes another overpaid underachiever from the previous  era).  Watching Bozak passively play defence in his own end has been painful to watch for years.

Loved the move.

Not a huge fan of Ben Smith. However,  there is an expansion draft coming up... and they maybe wanted to protect Kapenen and Soshnikov... Ben Smith is a quick fix and he can rotate with Griffin.

Plus, Brown deserved the bump up.

Will Hunwick be the next one down?

Lots of reports of the Ducks heavily scouting the Leafs recent games and they will be scouting tonight too.

Whispers of JVR for a dman.

Given Anaheim's cap/Lindholm situation it seems tough to see what move they could make there where they took back money. I could see the Leafs making a move to take on some salary from Anaheim for picks/prospects but other than that...

Who is the target for the Leafs in these 'whispers'?

Lindholm is the obvious name, but Fowler is being mentioned quite a bit too.

As Nik mentioned, the Ducks are in cap hell and they have an internal budget also.

I don't think I'd do JVR for Fowler straight up, but Lindholm is another matter.

It's funny. All off-season when people were talking about the Ducks and their cap situation the idea that they also had an internal budget was frequently mentioned but they've seemingly made no attempt to get below the cap and apparently very much want to get Lindholm signed.

They don't have much in the way of bad money, Bieksa and Kesler being the exceptions, but unless they find a way to move one of those then signing Lindholm will mean they'll have to move someone like Fowler for basically no money coming back.

So, to wit, I wonder if maybe the deal being kicked around is more of the 4 quarters for a dollar idea where Fowler goes to the Leafs and a couple of B prospects go to the Ducks.

I was just kicking that idea around too, I took a look and the Ducks are at 46 contracts, if we take one or two back from them, we could really clear the decks a bit.

I really don't know what the Ducks are going to do. Stoner would be the easiest to move in a pure cap dump move, but even that wouldn't give the Ducks enough space to fit Lindholm in at $5mil.

This is probably going to end up being another case of a really good young RFA being forced to accept less because his GM ran into cap issues.

Speaking of the Ducks, guess who is back to running second fiddle to Randy Carlyle? Dallas Eakins is coaching the Ducks' AHL affiliate in San Diego.

Lindholm/Vatanen or bust. Please don't blink for Fowler or Stoner.

Could you have a JVR and Gardiner package? Carlye is a big Gardiner fan, right?

That's 8.3 million of salary going to Anaheim.

You'd need to take Kesler and Fowler and they'd still not be able to afford Lindholm.

Now if they want to give us Kesler and Lindholm, then we can talk.
