Mike Kostka

I would think that Holzer was a victim of his waiver status more than Kostka had jumped him. Kostka may have looked a bit better than Holzer and that was enough to justify keeping Kostka up as there was no risk of losing Holzer on waivers.

Yeah. I think a lot of teams were clamoring to pluck Kostka off waivers. I'm sure he'd be with another team right now had they sent him back down.

It's strange because I never really heard of this guy before the season.

He wasn't in the Leafs' organization until he was signed as a free agent last summer.  He scored that fluky double OT goal that beat the Marlies in Game 3 of the Calder Cup final last year for Norfolk.

Well that explains that.

And before that he was on set filming The Avengers as Thor.

I think Kostka will probably be a career elevator guy up and down... He seems to lack NHL foot speed I feel for the role he would probably play. Holzer I think can end up being a darn good shiut down D man in a year or two.. Just think more of an upside..

Yeah. Seen him in that. That's one mean hammer he's got too. He should keep that thing on the bench for when the Bruins come to town on Saturday.

Interesting. I think if Kostka keeps up his play of late he could become a fixture on the Leafs blueline for years. I really haven't seen enough of Holzer to comment.

Wasn't Jason Garrison (for the Panthers) a bit of a Mike Kostka?

In that he was a bit of a journeyman late bloomer and caught on fairly late (26/27 years old)... then had that great season last year in which he parlayed that into suckering Mike Gillis into a huge contract?

I think in the long run Holzer will be the better guy. Im not sold on Kostka long term

Nice try Holzer posting under the moniker Boston Leaf.

Yes, nice...
I don't see a problem with his foot speed (at least not yet). I haven't seen an opposing forward blow by him. I've seen him move up even into the corners and not have a problem getting back. I think what is deceiving that might lead some to that conclusion is that when he has time (such as on the power play), he kind of takes his time, picks his way up the ice looking for the best pass or set up, as opposed to quickly rushing the puck up the ice. I think that is more than a question of style than foot speed. But time will tell.

I know he only played one game, but Holzer didn't really make much of a case to stick around. To say Kostka has looked "just a bit better" is quite the understatement.

For sure.

And they're two rather different types of dmen: Holzer, more physical and stay-at-home vs Kostka's offensive ability.

I do strongly suspect the Holzer vs Fraser decision was significantly influenced by Holzer being waiver exempt. I would have given Holzer the edge between those two though I like the edge Fraser brings.
