I expect they want to keep a 23 man roster, or at least 22. For road trips anyway.
I still expect Marner to sign for 10.6 at least. If only because if I were an NHL GM, I would be offer sheeting Marner at 10.5 and risking 2 firsts, a second and a third. Now maybe Marner doesn't want to sign an offer sheet, but I have to imagine there is one team at least willing to sign him for 10.5. We all know Montreal will offer 8.5.
But I think that's why the Montreal thing was so weird. If some team out there wanted to give Marner a 5 year/10.5 aav deal and Marner wanted to sign it with them then A) it probably would have happened already and B) the Leafs would almost certainly match. Because the Leafs would almost certainly match that offer, teams won't make it.
I would think someone would try, at least to put the team in a position where they have to make a roster move, but I agree they would have by now. It's surprising to me. Makes me think Marner also had no intention of ever signing an offer sheet. Using it as leverage is a different thing.
That means the Leafs and Marner are now going to have a staredown? 9 million vs 10 milllion? Give or take.
