Morgan Rielly extended 8 years @ 7.5M

I have no complaints. Tough guy to replace for less than 7.5 and it's not like we're overflowing with awesome defensemen.

Mo deserves more, the Leafs can't really afford much more; he's done us more of a solid than anyone other than Spezza.

I hope he becomes more Muzziny (which would make this a steal), but that's probably impossible.

Yeah. For all of you guys who give Matthews and Marner a heaping dose of scorn for "not giving the team a break" then Rielly, who's basically now agreeing to have been underpaid for his entire career, should very much be in your good books.

Tied for the 20th highest cap hit among defencemen next season (and will probably end up lower once some other contracts get signed), which feels about right.

I was just having a look at the same thing. He?s 55th right now.

Correct.

I genuinely understand the reasons to not love this deal as it looks like Rielly might not be the consistent 60+ point guy we thought he might while playing a solid D at 22+ minutes a night.

That said, if you're not super confident that you have the guy in house to replace Rielly then not sorting something out with him would leave a massive hole in the lineup that you couldn't realistically fill on the UFA market without spending this much money anyway. In light of that, I think it's a fair deal. Hopefully the trade protection isn't too heavy so if you decide you want to make a change you still can.

And, just on a personal level, I like Rielly so I'm good with 8 mroe yaers.

That's the key part. You're not getting anyone of his caliber for a better deal. Arguing whether he's the right fit and so on is all fair, but there's no question in my mind the value assigned is proper.

This willl put him tied for 21st in defense cap hits going into next year.

Rielly is basically 9th in PPG from 2018-19 onwards.

It's not an overpay, but is Rielly-Brodie & Muzzin-Holl a Stanley Cup winning defense?

I don't want to attribute his poor play to start the year to a new contract weighing on his mind, but I wonder if he will have a little extra skip to his stride now that this is all wrapped up and he knows he isn't going anywhere.

I mean, if they're all playing well it's not worse than Carlson-Niskanen & Orlov-Orpik.

He played very well last game. I don't think Brodie and Rielly have been the issue on D. Last year Rielly played 24 seconds per game shorthanded. This year so far, 2:28 and has been on for only 1 PPG against in 19:45 which is really good.

Really happy with this deal. He would have gotten at least a million more (if not two) as a UFA. As others have said, his departure would have left a huge hole in the D corps, and a UFA replacement at 7.5 likely wouldn't be as good.

I like Rielly, but I think this was a bad idea.  :-\
Honest question....can you find someone as good as him that the Leafs could have signed for that money as a UFA?

I like this one. I think it?s a great deal in comparison to some others. It?s nice to see a guy commit to one club for what could be the rest of his career. And he seems a nice guy who I like as a person
