Morgan Rielly

Just checking his stats, he's in a 5 way tie for 18th overall in rookie points, and in a tie for 7th overall in rookie D points.
But there's a 149 rookies ahead of him... in Date of Birth.

Yeah Rielly's been consistently playing at a 30 point pro-rated pace for a good chunk of the season. Not too shabby for a 19 year old.

If he can develop a decent shot, he'll be something else on offense.

You mean, like his first NHL goal?  He's already got a really hard shot IMO, I just think he's trying too hard to pick the top corner every time.  Get some rebounds, shoot for the tip, heck, just hit the net and his offensive numbers will increase.

Yes, that was one good shot, and we haven't seen it since.

You could be right, though, that he's trying to be too fancy.

His 2nd goal was a pretty nice shot IIRC.

I thought his snap shot and wrist shot were both pretty good. He needs to hit the net a bit more, but that will  come. I haven't noticed his slap shot to be a big boomer but I don't think dmen of his skillset are generally known for their howitzer.

Rielly now tied with Seth Jones for 7th in scoring among rookie D (plays about 3:00 less per game and has played 8 fewer games than Jones).  On pace for 30 points right now (same as Gardiner when he led rookie D in scoring a couple years ago, although at an older age).

Even then Krug and Gelinas are a couple years older than Rielly. It's interesting to see that 2012 Defenseman draft class really stand out this year.

He looks really good.  He needs to spend a good portion of the offseason getting stronger so that he doesn't get knocked off the puck as much in the corners and he could probably work on getting his shot on net a bit more.  He creates a lot of space for himself but them fires the puck 20 feet wide of the net.

Trouba, Maatta, Lindholm, Murray and Rielly have all been really good.

That draft class of 2012 is looking stacked as far as D-men are concerned.

Rielly has a few things to work on but he gives the impression of being a really sharp, hard-working kid, and I think he's one of those guys that will "deliver the goods" so to speak rather than be someone who's all hype.

Should he have been picked first overall?

As happy as I am with him, I'm still a little bummed we missed out on Galchenyuk.

I was making fun of Burke's first overall statement.  There was alot of good talent in the draft.  Buffalo has been messing around with Grigorenko who was the better prospect at the time.

Rielly's not very far behind him in points. I think Trouba was a bit of a surprise. I think he could contend for first overall. I'd like to see how Yakupov fares in the next few years.

I think if you did the 2012 draft all over again right now, the top 5 would be:

1. Murray
2. Galchenyuk
3. Trouba
4. Rielly
5. Yak

Just lookes back at that draft...what has happened with Griffin Reinhart?

He's just being brought along slowly. As you might recall, there were a lot of people here who advocated Rielly being sent back to Junior hockey for the year.

Yeah normally 19 and 20 year olds don't make the NHL.  The 2012 draft just had a surprising number of them.  In a couple years the big winners of the draft might seem different again.
