BTW, that is the dumbest rule ever.  Once you are drafted, you should have the option to go right into minor pros.  Good prospects today are ready for it.

It makes sense but then CHL teams only keep their top players for about half the time that they normally would, and they lose out on them in the prime of their junior careers. So good luck convincing them to agree to that.

Why would they get a say?

Well there's a transfer agreement between the CHL and NHL/AHL. That is whats been preventing teams from sending 18/19 year olds to the AHL in the first place. Or at least I should say that there was a transfer agreement. I believe it expired after last season and haven't heard anything about it since.

With that said, I get what I think you were saying. If the agreement has expired and this situation is up for debate I don't understand how the CHL could keep the NHL from demanding that signed 18/19 year olds be allowed to play in the AHL.

Yeah, I suppose I'm just wondering how that would work on the CHL's part. I mean I assume any transfer agreement they have with the NHL is largely at the NHL's convenience. It's not like the CHL could, absent a transfer agreement, keep young players from the NHL.

Thanks for delving into this more, guys.  I guess I wasn't considering the CHL's point of view.  Although, to hear guys like Ken Campbell tell it, the CHL is just this side of David Frost when it comes to exploiting the players, so maybe I shouldn't try to muster up too much sympathy for them.

Good article...

Bobby Mac seems to think that with Murray going down to injury, Rielly is a favourite to make the top D pairing at the WJC. It will be a lot of fun to watch him play in that tournament.

Actually I think they could.  Don't the CHL players sign a contract.  Wouldn't leaving for the NHL be considered breach of that contract if there was no transfer agreement.

Burke has told Hockey Canada that if Rielly makes the team (he will) that he will stay with the team for the duration of the tournament (no matter what happens with the NHL).

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=411416

This is very good news for Canada, Rielly and the Leafs... Canada needs this type of assurance on for as many of their key players as they can get.... for Rielly, it means he's likely a key player on the team and can focus on that.. plus it eliminates the possibility that certain players aren't selected due to chances of them heading to the NHL mid-tourney... and for the Leafs, it means they are focusing on the right things for Rielly's development vs. rushing him to the NHL in what will surely be a gong show of a season, if there even is one.

Good to see Burke put it to rest.  Other GM's should do the same thing.

I could not agree more...well said!

From what I've seen of him so far, the future may find that Burkie may not be that far off when he said Rielly was the best player of the 2013 draft. I know that's really premature, but his skill set has his stock rising. Can't wait to see him in world juniors. Rielly and Gardiner certainly give the Leafs something to get excited about on the back end.

Other than Yakupov as probably still going No. 1 it was a really strange draft class with a whole bunch of players who have a chance at developing into something special.

And then there are some like Matt Dumba who are already looking pretty disappointing. (yes, it's early). He had a spot to lose on Canada's defense and he really went out of his way to lose it.

So what's the knock on Dumba?

He was awful at the WJ selection camp that recently completed.  Hasn't had a great year previous to that either.

I get that he's been disappointing but I'm not sure why. What are some issues in his game?

I haven't had a chance to find out more but "disaster in his own zone every game" was the conclusion from some observers I know who know what they are talking about.  Will see if I can get some more details.

I don't know if this has been brought up you, but if Reilly were to be named captain of the Leafs, he would be Captain Morgan.  I smell an endorsement deal.  Also, it helps to be drunk when watching the Leafs.

Nothing could stand in our way if this happened.

Why is this the first I'm hearing of this!?!? What a wonderful idea.
