Morgan Rielly

I'm generally not enthusiastic for a club to burn a NHL contract year on an 18 year old dman - making him a UFA at 25. I haven't seen Rielly play much but he'd have to be incredible and the Leafs closer to contending before I'm likely to go along with it.

That's kind of how I fell...if the Leafs were closer to making some noise, I'd be all for it if he outplayed guys to make the team.  At this point, in this world of more strategic cap based team structuring, they're probably better off not burning off a year of controlled salary.

The answer, in a nutshell, is that the evidence would be statistical.  If one did some math and one had a large enough sample size one might (or might not) be able to determine a trend one way or another.  I understand gathering such evidence may be tricky.

I think the problem there is that because the more exceptional a player is the younger he's likely to be able to compete, any such measurement would probably be biased towards showing that the younger a player makes his debut the likelier he is to be a top flight player. It's an interesting question but not one that I think you can have an answer for unfortunately.

I said this earlier in this thread but to me what's better for Rielly is ultimately more important to me than the saving the year of the ELC.

Rielly with four assists tonight in an 8 - 4 Moose Jaw win over Medicine Hat.  This was probably the first game since getting back that he actually looked like the Rielly the Leafs drafted.  He was rushing the puck and had his legs going.  Hopefully he can continue this as the Warriors make a run at the playoffs.

Thanks for that update. It's always nice to hear the perspective from somebody that watched the game.

At the risk of sounding selfish here, I hope Moose Jaw doesn't make the playoffs, their season would end March 16th.  That way we can get him in a Leaf uniform for his 5 games and that would of course depend on the Leafs needs due to injuries and how well the current core is doing.  If the Leafs are out of contention for a playoff spot, the 5 games are a given.  Then after those games he can go down with the Marlies after that for their playoff run and shore up a d with the Marlies that has struggled since the NHL lockout ended.

My only concern here is that the Marlies are still in the playoff picture by then. Without most of their best players they had to start the year, they have been dropping in the standings fast.

Rielly's last WHL game of the regular season will be 2 weeks from Saturday. Moose Jaw are all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. I would expect Rielly to join the Marlies at that point.

Will be great to see how he does.

Still irritating that Moose Jaw didn't trade him at the deadline.  Would have been best for him to get a shot at WHL post season before going to the AHL.

OTOH, he gets 17 regular season games with the Marlies to learn systems and get to know team mates before he plays in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Are the Marlies going to make the playoffs (leaf call ups have decimated them, no?)

They still lead their division by one point with 3 games in hand.

A little note about Rielly.  We had a Heritage Fair at one of the local schools the other day.  One of the students did her project on Rielly (he doesn't have historical significance, yet, but ...).  Anyway, towards the end of the morning, guess who shows up to sit at the display and sign autographs but Morgan Rielly.  I'm not sure whether the student and her parents contacted the Warriors or what, but I thought that was pretty great of him to say that he wanted to come and help her out.  He looked a little embarassed to be a project among people and events that have historical significance in Canada, but he was the most popular display there!  Rielly seems to get that community is huge in hockey.  Just thought you all might find this interesting!

Very cool thanks for sharing.

With the MJ Warriors season ending yesterday, how soon before we see Rielly in a Marlies or Leafs uniform?

They're not bringing Rielly up to the Leafs before Gardiner.  Marlies.

Oh, I figured that much out myself. I'm interested in seeing him in a Marlies uniform though, ASAP. Just wondering what game he'll make his professional debut?

EDIT: with the log jam on D does Rielly even get a game with the Leafs this season?

It was reported somewhere he would be with the Marlies on Wednesday.  The Marlies play Tuesday and Friday this week, so he will likely make his pro debut Fri in Chicago.
