Morgan Rielly

I was just going through sportsnet magazine, a pre draft copy, and in it they've suggested Rielly going first overall to the oilers as the top defenseman in the draft.

Just thought I'd share.

I have a question.... suppose Burke had had the opportunity to draft the first or second pick (hence, Yakupov, or Murray respectively).  Would he have chosen an "NHL-ready" centre in Yakupov (considering the Leafs needs at that position), or, would he have opted for an "NHL-ready" defenseman in Murray?

Or...neither of the two, and still choosing Reilly?

What do you think?

Yakupov plays on the wing, not down the middle.

Burke has already said he would've taken Rielly first overall.

Did Mclean do up that draft report?  Because we know he had so many great drafts with columbus.

Notes from Canada-Russia Challenge:

Morgan Rielly (Toronto Maple Leafs, 5th in 2011) ? After a shortened WHL season due to injury, Morgan Rielly donned the red and white to prove that his talents were worthy of a lottery pick and that?s exactly what he did. As with most young defensemen, Rielly will continue to work on his defensive game but at this point he shows that he?s capable and at least being on-par with his peers in that area. On the attack, Rielly dazzled with his rare ability to find open ice as his confidence with the puck allows for him to hold onto the puck long enough to open up lanes for attacking. His skating was his most impressive asset and that?s reassuring for a player that experienced a serious ACL injury. Morgan Rielly will be one of Canada?s top defensemen at the upcoming 2013 World Junior Championships as he?s a lock for this team.

Stat Line: 1G 3A

If Reilly dazzled after almost a whole year of injury then his talent ceiling is very high. Nice to see that kind of potential in the Leaf system.

Which just means that going forward every single Leafs trade rumour will revolve around either Gardiner and/or Rielly.... cuz nobody else regards our young players/prospects as anything to write home about.

Really?  By most, if not all, accounts, isn't the Leafs' prospect pool in the top half of the league?

You haven't read many other message boards have you?

Guys like Kadri and Colborne have very little trade value in a lot of fans' eyes.  And since I mentioned trade rumours - that's what I was getting at.  Remember the Rick Nash stuff?  I remember everyone saying we didn't have enough (even tv dudes like Kypper, Doug Mclean, etc).

Go ahead, mention their names in trade rumours and see what happens.  I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just saying that most people don't look highly on many  of our prospects.

Those are probably the last places I would look to gauge trade value of just about any player, and especially not Leafs prospects, and what Kipper and Doug MacLean think might be even lower on my list.

From people I speak to whom I regard their knowledge and objective opinions highly, Kadri is still regarded as a top end prospect and would conceivably have plenty of value in a trade. Perhaps not as much as some of us with blue chip glasses on all day long might hope, but he is still considered a guy who will be a player.

I'm not really sure why you keep suggesting he has little value, because it simply isn't true.
